Abandoned millstones at Bolehill Quarry, near Grindleford in the Peak District, Derbyshire.

Millstones were quarried by hand in the Peak District from the 13th to 19th century.

Approximately 1500 now lie abandoned throughout the national park.

Just a little joke I’ve been doing for years where I pretend he wrote it on different Northern stations and people correct me, often with plaque-based evidence. Harmless fun. It was Grindleford.

From his official biography by Robert Hilburn:
PAUL SIMON: THE LIFE It was the trip that inspired his second great song, "Home-ward Bound." Later, in interviews, Simon would often say the song grew out of the northern England tour, even specifying on occasion the time he sat in a railway station in Widnes, an industrial town southeast of Liverpool. As that story spread, fans headed to Widnes. Welcoming any positive attention-the town was long the butt of jokes because of an awful smell caused by fumes from local chemical plants—townsfolk took pride in and placed a plaque outside the train station to mark the spot where they believed Simon wrote the song. Even though Simon subsequently tried to clarify the situation by saying he thinks he only got the inspiration for "Homeward Bound" in Widnes, the story was hard to kill. After the first two plaques were stolen, a third was set up inside the station, where someone could keep an eye on it.
