If it matters, my goal is to underplant with native plant understory shrubs and groundcovers so this won’t be a “lawn tree.” I have my heart set on some Viburnum acerifolium. I do not have deer in my yard, but squirrels and voles do a fair amount of damage.

Tree planting isn’t enough—and monoculture plantations aren’t forests. The real goal should be polyculture forests: diverse, locally appropriate trees, shrubs, fungi, groundcovers, wildlife habitat, and healthy soil.

Protect old forests. Restore native ecosystems🌳🌿🐝

If you live in the #PNW, this is a helpful article.

I have a lot of Blue Star Creeper and have always liked it, partly because it spreads fairly quickly. Contrary to what this says, though, it also dries out very quickly and requires frequent watering.

This little beauty is cherry skullcap! One of my very favorite groundcovers. It’s not at its best right now, but the first flush of blooms is WILD. It’s about three inches tall, spreads slowly, and is not on the drip.

Other good, taller groundcovers (controllable spreaders) include zigzag goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis), large-leaf aster (Eurybia macrophylla), and sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis). Some of these you can find at typical nurseries, others you have to go further (Baldwin’s, Lahave Drumlins).

One of my favorite groundcovers for moist shady areas, can make a literal carpet beneath understory trees/shrubs when happy and selfseeds like crazy! A powerhouse for dealing with switchgrass in these areas - and also double as a folk-remedy for poison ivy/bug bites by rubbing whole plant on you
