watching the pee-wee documentary really reminded me how much he in particular really confused my child brain in exactly this way, and after the documentary i realized "oh, he just came up with a groundlings character bit that killed and never stopped doing it"
the 80s had a high density of celebrities whose authenticity was hard to figure out, as a kid. like, was Mr. T a real guy? he was like that in shows/movies but also in interviews? or pee wee, elvira, max headroom, various wrestlers. even alf was on celebrity squares. it was a confusing time.

i normally don't get involved in oscar horse race nonsense but i'm in the bag this year for hamnet and a casting oscar. they did superb work finding actors with authentic peasant face to play the groundlings. they filled a whole theater with people who have never "seen an iphone". remarkable work
