Not to romanticize Sony but part of the reason Alfa System were able to make a few of these strange and experimental games was because of Sony’s involvement, and they were far from the only (RPG) developer to benefit from this. It's a real loss for Sony.

A final point. It’s been interesting to see various Japanese developers name drop Gunparade in interviews in the past few years, certainly a testament to its influence. In any case, I hope to keep writing about the history of Gunparade and its extended world. There's a lot to cover.

Gunparade March for the sony playstation never came out in English. Until now.

The whole game is translated, every story scene, 17,000+ lines of small talk, menus, and most of the text inside images.

Playtest build is out. Testers wanted!

Which is also to say that true to being a cult game, GPM had a very strong and active fan base whose activities seemed to have been encouraged by Alfa System who published fan art and gifts sent to the office on the GPM website as well as also hosting a repository of fan sites.

This was precisely the case for players who began congregating on Alfa System’s Gunparade March BBS where they attempted to solve the riddles of the world. Also participating were Yuri Shibamura and Souichirou Yagami. This played out a bit like a collaborative TTRPG/ARG.

Those who played Elemental Gearbolt (perhaps read its World Guidance book) and then play Gunparade March (taking care to visit the Kumamoto Library), will begin to notice the larger narrative running in the background (denpa!).

I’ve been (slowly) playing around with that at github.com/Davermouse/g.... As you say probably impossible to do anything proper (and for sure my Japanese isn’t up to it) but kinda fun to play with, even if just browsing the event scripts and art

As for the gameplay, it’s a mix of romance sims + wargames + RPGs + life sim. Not only is it daunting but getting the true can be difficult as the combat can be complex and unpredictable. Just when you think you've won, here's a platoon of monsters to ambush you.

I've described Alfasys' PS1 RPGs as being RPGs for RPG devs and nowhere is that more true than Gunparade March. I almost never use the word "masterpiece" since it's so hackneyed, but if ever there was one for systems-driven storytelling, GPM is it, as barely held together as parts of it often are.

Nice Games dubs it one of the best games of the year and it also goes on to win a few awards, including the Seiun. While many games have been nominated, to this day, Gunparade March is the only game to have actually won.

This culminates with Dengeki publishing a full strategy/world guide for Gunparade (which they would later do again for the game's spiritual sequel, Neon Genesis Evangelion 2).

A month later, Gunparade March takes the magazine's front cover which features a quite detailed guide to various aspects of the game. To add some more context which makes this impressive, this is a moment where everyone is talking about DQ VII and FF IX.

Furthermore, the PlayStation 2 was already six months. Who would care for some obscure PS game? Well, Dengeki PlayStation did! Although it only earned two reviews of 70 & 80, the magazine continuously provided coverage: www.patreon.com/OgreRun/post...

As the story goes, the game had little marketing and even those who came across it were confused as to what type of game it was. Romance simulator? Mecha strategy game? Here’s an interview with a games store manager who spoke of doing his best to sell the game: www.patreon.com/OgreRun/post...
