a close-up of a mint flower with a hood-like upper lip & three spreading lobes on the lower lip. the corolla is mostly white, but on the middle lobe of the lower lip there is a patch of yellow, as well are light purple streaks. inside the mouth of the flower there are also some purple streaks leading up to the two lateral bottom lip lobes. hovering above the mouth of the flower & shelter by the hood, the flower has a "tongue" composed of fuzzy stamens with white & purple hairs & cream colored anthers, and a curving style just above. a lil white bug is sittin on a leaf bract just above the flower too! three blooming flowers on a guyandotte beauty (as well as a fourth getting ready to open). those white flowers have hood-like upper lips and a lower lip divided into three lobes, the middle of which is stained pale yellow & streaked with purple. the inside of the corolla tube also has purple streaks. beneath of hood of the flower there is a white & purple fuzzy "tongue" of fused stamens, and a slender curving style. a look at the entire plant. this guyandotte beauty is growing in a forested creek bottomland among fallen dry leaves, a rotting log, and other short vegetation. low on the main stem there are opposite pairs of heart-shaped, toothed leaves with long leaf stems. towards the top, there are sessile lead bracts under each of the flowers. the flowers are white, with a hood-like upper lip & a 3-lobed lower lip. the middle lobe on the lower lip has a yellow patch as well as purple streaks.

the top of a raceme of large mint-type flowers, which grown in opposite pairs that grow off the main stem perpendicular to the pairs above and below. the topmost pair of flowers have yet to fully open; there are two pairs of large blooming flowers below them. each flower has a hairy green leaf bract right below it; the bracts get smaller the further up the stem. each flower has a short green calyx with four unequal, pointed lobes. the base of the corolla is a narrow, ascending white tube which quickly widens before splitting into an upper and a lower lip. the upper lip is covered with tiny hairs on the outside and is hood-like, providing a roof over the flower's throat & the stamens and style, which shelter just beneath. the stamens have white and purple hairs; the style is a little taller but arches downward more sharply than the stamens. the corolla's lower lip has three large lobes. the two lateral lobes are white and hang off to the sides, while the larger middle lobe hangs straight down. the middle lobe is pale yellow in the center and streaked with many parallel light purple lines which continue down into the throat of the flower. a close-up of one blooming guyandotte beauty flower, mostly but not entirely from the side. the corolla is tubular, bilabiate, and has short glandular hairs on its outside surface. the upper lip is white and bends forward to cover the throat of the flower like a hood. beneath it there are two pairs on arching, hairy stamens colored white and purple, as well as a slightly taller white style (difficult to see here). the bottom lip has three large lobes; the two on the sides are white and spread sideways. the bottom lobe is white with a patch of pale yellow in the center which is interrupted by many parallel light purple streaks, which continue into the throat of the flower and run along its inside surface even beneath the lateral lobes of the bottom lip. an entire guyandotte beauty, growing in leaf litter on the floor of a moist creek bottomland. it has a few opposite pairs of heart-shaped green leaves with scalloped margins, growing on long leafstems low on its hairy main stem. above the leaves there is a tall terminal raceme of large mint-type flowers growing in opposite pairs subtended by leaf bracts. only the topmost three pairs of flowers are still blooming; the rest have faded and dropped their corollas. the flowers are white and have a hood-like upper lip and a drooping, three-lobed lower lip. the middle lobe on the bottom lip has a pale yellow patch in the middle and many parallel, light purple streaks. the inner surface of the flower also bears these purple lines.

Never, actually! The Brumfields were always (West) Virginians, settled along the Guyandotte River for several generations

My mother's family moved from Germany to Ohio circa 1850

My mom and dad met in Parkersburg on the Ohio River along the OH-WV border, which is why I talk about both.
