Heimdall possesses extraordinary hearing in Norse mythology. Gylfaginning says he can hear grass growing on the earth and wool growing on sheep. Mythology imagined hearing so acute that even processes humans consider completely silent become audible. #MythologyMonday

In the current issue of Forgotten Ground Regained, @mathjones.bsky.social has fun rewriting the opening of the Gylfaginning (part of the PROSE Edda!) as Viking verse.

"In 1220, Snorri released this, the Edda, his most accomplished work. I think his undisputed masterpiece is Gylfaginning, a text so enthralling that most people probably don't notice the subtext."

A curious project, perhaps.

To turn Snorri's Prose Edda, written to save the poetics of Medieval Iceland, into traditional alliterative verse; continuing his project maybe?

Part one of Gylfaginning in Verse is here, free to stream, for now.

Own sisters' children | shall sin together;

An axe-age, a sword-age, | shields shall be cloven;
A wind-age, a wolf-age, | ere the world totters.”

#RandomCardIWorkedOn, November 16, 2024: Replicating Ring.
Kaldheim was inspired by Norse mythology. The Gylfaginning describes a ring, Draupnir, given to Odin by the dwarves. "This quality attended it: that every ninth night there fell from it eight gold rings of equal weight." #WotCstaff

The fact that Thor's skirts aren't full length, and go only to his knees, is important. The knee-length Norse skirt, the serkr, was not a formal garment, and certainly not something you'd wear to a wedding.

There's a famous example of one, worn by the troll-wife Hyrrokin in the Gylfaginning.

I was reading up on mythological dwarfs for lore inspiration and came across this hilariously unexplained detail.

"In Asgard the wolf
was weaned and fed
only by God;
the others were fearful.
But words on the wind,
and the wolf's thriving,
had them working a plan
to ward off harm."

Pt. 4 of 'Gylfaginning in Verse' tells of the gods, & of wolf's binding.

@mathjones.bsky.social is working on an alliterative verse translation of the Prose Edda -- a fun concept! ...

Here's his version of the opening of the Gylfaginning ...

@mathjones.bsky.social has some cool Norse-style poetic takes on pieces of the Prose Edda! Check out, for instance,his opening for the Gylfaginning ... might help clear up a lot of those names ...

Eighth is Loving:

if despairing of love.
She spins permission
from All-father & Beloved,
that obstacles to love,
bans & forbidings,
are blown away.

Pt. 5 of Gylfaginning in Verse tells of goddesses, including this verse for Lofn.

Before I forget, let me mention one more Math Jones piece in the current issue: his "Opening of the Gylfaginning", part of the Prose Edda paraphrased in Norse style alliterative verse.

Snorri Sturluson's "The Prose Edda", specifically "Gylfaginning (The Deluding of Gylfi)", part 14 "Asgard and the Origin of the Dwarves". My English translation has a lot fewer accents and curly bits.

I don't know offhand if there's a good snappy genre name for "works like Paradise Lost and Gylfaginning which attempt to distill myths into a cohesive, literary narrative" but the Ainulindale, at least to me, is clearly aiming at being a "synthetic" version of that.
