This was the hanging of Marie and Frederick Manning, a married couple who murdered Marie's lover. Dickens later based the character of Hortense in Bleak House on Marie and, unbeknownst to him, witnessed this hanging in the company of a young American writer named Herman Melville.

Public executions were not abolished out of tenderness towards the criminal.

They were abolished because of the effect on the people watching, and the dangers of making human death a source of commercial entertainment.

i mean all of ours were terrific. the department has a very long and strong history in africana. Hortense Spillers was here, who was one of the top 2 or 3 scholars of african american in the 80s-90s (and a really nice person, i sat with her on a bus when she needed directions). But it got really bad

I'm going to write it, but something needs to be written about how within the visuality of IWTV, Black characters are shaped by the death dealing cruelty of the backgrounded hold. They are more than not flesh in pain, as in "ripped appart", "pierced", "seared", "divided" (h/t Hortense Spillers).
