A geiko or maiko enters a venue during Hatsuyori—the formal early-January New Year gathering in Kyoto's historic hanamachi (flower districts).
Captured mid-step as she glides through a traditional wooden threshold, a geiko or maiko enters a venue during Hatsuyori—the formal early-January New Year gathering in Kyoto's historic hanamachi (flower districts). She wears a trailing sky-blue silk hikizuri adorned with exquisite, hand-dyed yūzen motifs featuring festive New Year symbols, including pine (matsu), plum blossoms (ume), and auspicious ceremonial motifs, bound by a heavy gold-threaded fukuro-obi woven in complex geometric medallions. Overhead, a draped terracotta-and-cream curtain (maku) bearing a bold family crest (mon) is drawn back and anchored by a sage-green silk tassel (fusa), framing her as she steps through the parted wooden sliding doors (koshido). The image evokes an intimate, sensory atmosphere: the crisp chill of a clear winter morning, the dry rustle of heavy silk crepe (chirimen) trailing across the floor, the metallic glint of woven gold thread in the sunlight, and the quiet, measured cadence of soft footsteps on polished timber. Hatsuyori (literally "first gathering") marks the official commencement of the artistic year for the geisha community, a day when performers pay ceremonial calls to their dance masters, tea houses (ochaya), and matrons to exchange New Year greetings and pledge devotion to their craft. The ensemble worn for this occasion represents the absolute pinnacle of Japanese textile arts. The hikizuri demonstrates master-level yūzen paste-resist dyeing combined with subtle hand-embroidery (shisū) and gold leaf accents (kindachi), featuring symbolic motifs chosen to invoke longevity and prosperity for the coming season. Complementing the kimono, the opulent obi reflects Nishijin-ori weaving traditions, where flat metallic foil threads (kinran) are intricately interwoven with silk to create a relief-like surface structure.

Maiko ‘Toshimomo’
This intimate portrait captures Maiko Toshimomo, formerly one of the most celebrated apprentice geisha of Kyoto's Miyagawachō hanamachi, showcasing the delicate seasonal symbolism and refined artistry of the karyūkai ("flower and willow world"). Framed against her traditionally sculptured hairstyle (nihongami), her ensemble features a seasonal cascade of hand-crafted silk cherry blossom (sakura) tsumami kanzashi, signaling the arrival of peak spring in April. To the opposite side, fluttering metal bira-bira kanzashi strips catch the ambient light, creating a subtle shimmer alongside the soft red silk kanoko cloth woven into the crown of her hair. Her traditional oshiroi (white porcelain) makeup exemplifies the meticulous aesthetic standards maintained by Kyoto's apprentice artists. The luminous white ground is accented by soft blushes of crimson (beni) surrounding the outer corners of her eyes and outlining her brows, creating a soft, ethereal frame for her facial features. Crucially, both her upper and lower lips are fully painted in vibrant red pigment—a key sartorial milestone distinguishing senior apprentices from novices, who are permitted to paint only the lower lip during their first year of debut. Sartorially, Toshimomo wears an elegant, pale cream silk kimono featuring a subtle woven jacquard pattern (rinzu), framed at the neckline by a predominantly white, densely embroidered under-collar (han'eri). As a maiko advances through her training toward erikae (the "turning of the collar" ceremony marking her graduation to full geiko status), her heavily patterned red collars gradually yield to these sophisticated white embroidered styles. Combined with the soft, luminous tones of her robe and the architectural precision of her hair ornaments, the portrait offers a timeless glimpse into the living textile and grooming traditions of Kyoto.

Maiko Satsuki-san . Photography by Hiroshi Mizobuchi, Japan
Satsuki-san, a celebrated figure of Kyoto's hanamachi. Formally framed from the waist up, the composition balances the high-contrast tonal interplay of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) with the geometric lines of a traditional oiled-paper umbrella (wagasa). The image provides a spectacular window into the timeless aesthetics of classical Japanese dress history, utilizing a rich palette of deep charcoals, velvety blacks, and luminous whites to evoke a profound sense of poise, focus, and quiet mastery. Satsuki-san is three-quarter turned toward the viewer, her expressive eyes creating a powerful psychological focal point. Her face is meticulously adorned in traditional oshiroi makeup, which acts as a pristine canvas of light in the center of the frame, throwing her softly arched eyebrows, defined eyeliner, and dark lips into sharp relief. Her hair is sculpted into a flawless, voluminous traditional chignon, catching subtle highlights along the polished, oiled ridges of the hairstyle. Delicate kanzashi hairpins peek out from the back of the arrangement, adding a touch of linear refinement to her silhouette. Shielding her from an unseen light source overhead is a beautifully opened wagasa. Held gracefully in her right hand by its dark, slender handle, the umbrella forms a striking geometric canopy. Satsuki-san is swathed in a formal, dark hikizuri kimono of exceptional material quality. The heavy silk fabric drapes smoothly over her shoulders, accentuated by a subtle, repeating woven crest (mon) on the sleeve. Her collar is pulled back in the classical style to expose the elegant curve of her neck. Wrapped securely around her torso is a wide, brilliantly patterned obi sash, decorated with a complex, dense design of cascading autumn chrysanthemums or waves. In her left hand, she gently hitches up the trailing skirt of her robe, revealing the rich, undulating wave patterns and dynamic borders of the inner lining—a classic posture of a traditional artist in motion.

Maiko Umehina (Okiya Umeno) from Kamishichiken in 2018. Japan
Maiko Umehina of the Umeno okiya (geisha house) in Kamishichiken—Kyoto's oldest hanamachi (geisha district). The medium close-up portrait frames Umehina-san as she adjusts her elaborate hair ornaments while gazing into a small handheld mirror. It offers a spectacular, real-world window into the living artistry of the geisha world, beautifully balancing the brilliant colors of traditional silks with a quiet, focused posture of modern craftsmanship. The upper portion of the frame focuses on her traditional, sculpted waremoko or ofuku hairstyle, crafted entirely from her own oiled black hair to expose the classic porcelain-white makeup of her face and neck. Her face is meticulously painted with traditional oshiroi (white pigment foundation), accentuated by softly arched black eyebrows, a touch of red-crimson eyeshadow at the outer corners of her eyes, and perfectly defined red lips. Her right hand is elegantly raised to her temple, her fingers lightly touching a dazzling array of silver and silk seasonal hair ornaments (kanzashi). A cluster of delicate, white and pink silk plum blossoms (ume) cascades down her left side, while silver fluttering metal strips (bira-bira) catch the light over her forehead, anchored by a vibrant red silk ribbon (kanoko) tied through the top of the chignon. Umehina-san is dressed in a magnificent, multi-layered ensemble characteristic of a senior apprentice geisha. She wears a lightweight, textured lime-green furisode kimono adorned with a continuous stenciled pattern of trailing white wisteria and stylized plum blossoms. Beneath the main kimono, a heavily embroidered white and red collar (eri) frames her neck, while a bright crimson silk inner lining peek out from her swinging sleeves. Wrapping her torso is a wide, vibrant orange obi sash decorated with bold white geometric grids, over which a smaller red silk sash (obiage) patterned with white fans is neatly tied.

4 - Kanohisa from Gion Higashi. (4 of 4)
our comparative focus from the districts of Tokyo directly to Kyoto, providing a fascinating look at the aesthetic lines that define the Kansai geisha and maiko traditions. By transitioning from the Kanto styles of Tokyo to a major district of Kyoto (hanamachi), the distinct architectural and decorative preferences of these historically competing cultural regions become immediately apparent. The structural geometry of the hair in the Gion Higashi style showcases an extraordinary breadth and sweep, particularly in the dramatic, angular flare of the side panels, or bin. This expansive silhouette acts as a theatrical frame for the head, creating a much sharper, wing-like protrusion than the rounder, more compact volume seen in Tokyo styles like Asakusa or Kagurazaka. The central topknot is highly integrated, nestled into a deep, pillowy layer of vibrant red kanoko shibori silk. What truly sets this style apart is the sheer scale and complexity of the kanzashi hair ornaments embellishing the coiffure. Adorning the center of the topknot is an elaborate silver fan-shaped pin, intricately inlaid with polished coral beads and green jadeite stones, which evokes a classic mid-twentieth-century elegance. To the left, a long coral-headed pin, known as a kanoko-dome, pierces the dark hair, while the left background erupts with a cluster of seasonal, dangling tsumami kanzashi pleated silk ornaments in red and white floral motifs. On the right, a translucent, carved amber or tortoiseshell hairpin catches the light, adding a rich tonal contrast to the dark luster of the hair. Crucially, the treatment of the nape of the neck, or eri-ashi, marks the ultimate return to high formality, beautifully mirroring the Akasaka example but with a sharper execution. The thick white shironuri makeup is meticulously painted to leave a striking, pristine three-pronged fork of natural bare skin exposed.

2- Chiharu from Asakusa (2 of 4)
To complement the striking image of Mameka from Akasaka, this perspective of Chiharu from Asakusa provides an insightful comparative study of the regional nuances within Tokyo’s traditional geisha districts (hanamachi). While both hairstyles share the fundamental architecture of a formal updo structured around a central topknot (mage), the subtle variations in silhouette, ornamentation, and context reveal how distinct neighborhoods preserve their own unique heritage and style preferences. The structural composition of Chiharu’s hairstyle leans into a softer, slightly more rounded volumization of the side panels (bin) compared to the sleek, taut pulling seen in the Akasaka style. The central topknot is secured with a striking, bicolored red and white kanoko shibori textile ribbon, which features a more pronounced dappled pattern. Rather than wrapping tightly around the base as a solid band of color, this dapple-dyed ornament splits over the crown with geometric precision, creating a beautiful alternating texture that frames the dark sheen of the hair. The choice of ornamentation in this image also signals a shift toward a beautifully minimalist or perhaps more casual, seasonal aesthetic. Notably absent is the horizontal lacquer kanzashi hairpin seen on Mameka, allowing the texture of the folded shibori fabric to serve as the primary focal point. Furthermore, the casual refinement of the look is emphasized by the attire; rather than a formal, heavy black kuromontsuki kimono, Chiharu wears a crisp, white summer yukata adorned with traditional blue bamboo (take) motifs. The neckline treatment also highlights a subtle regional shift, showing a clean, unpainted nape rather than the formal, three-pronged eri-ashi makeup, perfectly matching the lighter summer garment. Together, these two images offer a remarkable masterclass in how subtle choices in textile coordination and hair execution differentiate the classic identities of Tokyo's historic districts.

maiko Kimika. Photographed by Watanabe-san within Kyoto's historic hanamachi (flower districts)
Framed in a slender vertical aperture between warm wood paneling and an entrance curtain, the maiko Kimika turns her gaze with poised tranquility, caught in a quiet moment of transition. Her visage is painted in pristine shiro-nuri (white foundation) accented by vivid crimson lip rouge (beni) and subtle pink shading around the eyes. She wears a formal black trailing kimono (kuromontsuki hikizuri), its lower skirt embellished with hand-dyed floral and stream motifs. Bound at her waist is a golden brocade obi accented by a dappled crimson obiage sash, with a decorative brocade paper case (hakoseko) tucked neatly into her lapel. Her sculpted wareshinobu coiffure is adorned with shimmering silver flutter-leaf hairpins (bira-bira kanzashi), seasonal silk blossoms, and a red tie-dyed silk pad (kanoko) nestled in the crown. In the shadowed corridor behind her, a small domestic dog stands softly out of focus, adding a touch of quiet intimacy to the scene.

Kamishichiken (上七軒) is the oldest of Kyōto's Hanamachi (花街 'geisha districts').
The name translates as '7 Upper Houses' and is thought to be a reference to the 7 teahouses constructed with leftover material from the rebuilding of Kitano Tenman-gū in Muromachi times.

Kimika, maiko of Miyagawa-cho. 2004, Japan
The photograph is a celebration of the living material culture of the Hanamachi (the geisha districts). Set against the dark, clean lines of a traditional charred cedar (yakisugi) wall of a Kyoto machiya, the high-contrast composition allows the brilliant colors of the young woman’s attire to appear incredibly luminous. Bending her head in a posture of quiet, classic refinement, Kimika represents an unbroken lineage of artistry, discipline, and highly codified textile traditions. The upper register of the photograph offers a magnificent study in traditional hair ornamentation and seasonal symbolism. Kimika's hair is coiffed in the elaborate wareshinobu style—the signature hairstyle of a junior maiko—which is beautifully adorned with handcrafted tsumami kanzashi (silk pinch-crepe hair ornaments). The crown of her hair features clusters of delicate purple, blue, and white blossoms, from which a long, dramatic shidare-kanzashi of cascading wisteria (fuji) petals drapes gracefully down her left temple, signaling the arrival of late spring. On the opposite side, a silver, fan-shaped bira-bira kanzashi with dangling metal strips catches the light, adding a brilliant metallic shimmer to her immaculate, white-painted face and classical beni makeup. Her garments and accessories showcase the height of Kyoto's weaving and embroidery craftsmanship. She wears a rich, deep crimson hikizuri (trailing kimono) decorated with delicate, hand-painted and embroidered white floral vines flowing over her shoulder. Below her embroidered white-on-white collar, the front of her heavy darari obi (dangling obi) is visible, featuring a bright, festive pattern of seasonal chrysanthemums and maples set against a white ground. Most spectacular of all is her pocchiri—the exceptionally large, decorative obidome clasp unique to maiko—which is set with a striking, colorful array of natural semi-precious stones and coral.
