I drew Hapu'u Ferns for Inktober day 8. Using Laulima Hawaii's prompt list. I only drew the leaves here in this piece, so you can't really tell what a large fern Hapu'u is. These fern trees can grow up to 30 ft tall! From my memory, they are also very hairy plants. The fronds are covered in what looks like orangutan fur.

Hapu gets her name from hāpuʻu, a familiar of tree ferns found throughout Hawaiʻi, especially after lava flows
As a farmer, I speculate her name refers to the hāpuʻu variety of kalo (taro); it’s a prominent staple food for Hawaiians and symbolizes our familial connection to the land
Official art of Hapu Photo of a Hāpuʻu tree fern in a wet forest Hāpuʻu is found naturally growing throughout the island of Hawaiʻi, typically growing in sense wet rainforest and even out of recent lava flows (befitting not only the Ground-type but also the Ground-type Z move Tectonic Rage, as it is a super powered version of Earth Power, both of which uses volcanic eruptions to attack their enemies). They are found and cultivated on almost all islands. They produce a brown fibrous fluff that had many uses, like garnish for food, embalming the dead and later filling for beds and pillows Image showing the different qualities of the hāpuʻu variety of kalo. Two lau (leaves) lay below a stalk cutting (huli) a corm (kalo) cut to reveal its light meat color and two stalks (hā) Kalo is an important and prominent staple food for the Native Hawaiian people. There are many different varieties of kalo with corms that can be either eaten in cut cubes, pounded to a dry paste (paʻi ʻai) or made into poi. It’s highly nutritious & fibrous but if some varieties are not cooked/prepared correctly it can cause mouth/stomach irritation due to calcium oxalate crystals found within the corm’s meat. Poi and the food made from such come in a variety of colors, from purple to pink to nearly white, and it’s a popular choice for baby food. The leaves of the kalo were also used to make lūʻau (a dish made with the leaves based with coconut milk and either chicken or squid) and covered over meat to make laulau. Old Hawaiians dined primarily on fish meat and kalo, with the more extravagant foods like chicken, pork and dog (yes, dog) being reserved for the aliʻi. It was up to the makaʻāinana (common folk) to farm their own food and/or trade for what they didn’t have, a portion even being given to the aliʻi or even the akua if requested. Due to the ʻaikapu, a social mandate that seperated men and women while eating (among other things), women weren’t allowed to eat certain foods and a man & woman were never allowed to eat together under penalty of death. In addition, only the men were allowed to farm and cook while also being the only ones to be used for sacrifices to Kūkāʻilimoku. This is relevant to the following story in the next image (I really hope y’all are reading these like come on I don’t write this much for my own health!) She is bent down lifting two kalo out of the mud of the loʻi kalo (wetland taro patch) Poi made from kalo grown on Kauaʻi are said to be the best tasting in all the islands (I may be biased 😅). Kalo farming, especially for wetland kalo, is a very muddy responsibility and takes hard work. People say that the dirtier and muddier you are while getting out of the loʻi shows how much work you did, if you’re clean while getting out of the loʻi then it shows you didn’t do much work at all (befitting Hapu since ground type and her traditional strict attitude). The kalo is sacred to the Hawaiian people due to our creation story. In the beginning before the islands were born, there was Wākea the sky father and Papahānaumoku the earth mother. Together they birthed all the islands of Hawaiʻi and a separate daughter by the name of Kahoʻohōkūkalani (“the one who places stars in the sky”). Wākea was infatuated with his daughter’s beauty but feared invoking Papa’s jealousy and wrath. So after consulting his kahuna, came up with the ʻaikapu system, where they would be separated while eating and during the menstrual period. After Papa agreed, Wākea was free to seduce Kahoʻohōkūkalani, and birthed with her a child named Hāloanakalaukapalili (“Hāloa of the quivering leaf”) who was unfortunately stillborn. The mother cried over the baby’s grave until a plant grew in its place: the first kalo. Wākea and Kahoʻohōkūkalani later had another child named Hāloa, the first Hawaiian man. And so the tradition was taught that the kalo, and by extension the ʻĀina (land), was our elder and as long as we took care of it, it will feed and care for us. Just like sibling relationships, the elder feeds the younger and the younger takes care of the elder.
