Jeff Schwarz, Free Jazz. Matter-of-fact 2022 overview of the music since Coleman, w/ semi-technical descriptions of harmolodics & the compositional systems of Braxton, Threadgill, etc. Treats surrounding racial issues w/o polemics. Can't imagine anyone covering this topic better in 125 p. #readin26.

RIP James ‘Blood’ Ulmer - “Jazz is the Teacher (Funk Is the Preacher)” blew my mind when I heard it on C81, the NME / Rough Trade cassette compilation. Scorching guitarist + I like his Jimi-ish vocals too. Still don’t really know what “harmolodics” is though youtu.be/L_2gFCZ3Kb8

Trying to remember where I saw him play (it was a long time ago). This album is so fresh.

Like a Tom Verlaine cover of Captain Beefheart with a generous splash of Ulmerian harmolodics mixed in. De-light-ful!

Two that come to mind immediately: Elliott Carter (at 90) in '98, generously giving me 4 hours at his Connecticut home & feeding me lunch; Ornette Coleman--sweet, gentle, unguarded--spending 4.5 hours w/me at his NY loft in '04, including handing me his alto to play & giving me a harmolodics lesson.
Screw "never meeting your heroes." What were some times you met your heroes and they were super cool?

Walk home a happy man.

Requiescat Blood Ulmer, fantastically original guitarist who absorbed harmolodics completely and developed his own take on it over the course of about a million records. Go lean on Odyssey or Tales of Captain Black or Black Rock or Freelancin' and see how it feels

Wild thought: Ornette Coleman is the Arnold Schoenberg of jazz. His concept of harmolodics is intriguing and he was just about the only person who could create listenable music using it.

Don't worry, almost nobody does, including jazz people. The best explanation of it I've seen is Ethan Iverson's ethaniverson.com/rhythm-and-b...
Ornette 1: Forms and Sounds
Before he invented Harmolodics, Ornette Coleman was comparatively direct in conversation. Gunther Schuller’s probing questions make the following interview an especially important document. G…
