The research team suggests that some people exposed to HCMV develop a chronic intestinal infection. The virus then enters the bloodstream or travels through the vagus nerve to the brain. CMV may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

this is vital research about the interaction of sars-cov-2 with human cytomegalovirus. I lack standing to comment on any implications -- I read papers like this in the late 80s, but not many after that -- but that sars-cov-2 can "reactivate" hcmv from latency seems to my layman's mind v. troubling

The @who.int cancer agency just added cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) to the growing list of viruses officially linked to cancer. That brings the number of known cancer-associated viruses to 10.

Oh, HEY, this is both really good news (A stronger causative pathway and something we can potentially vaccinate against) and potentially very scary. Alzheimers as a potential Long HCMV.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infects 60%–90% of the population worldwide. In #JVirology, researchers show that the HCMV-encoded protein UL22A is necessary for reactivation from latency in CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells and in a humanized mouse model. asm.social/32g

💯

It’s also worth considering that the same may be true of HCMV. There is developing data that HCMV is beneficial to immune priming and this work from @bpfairfax.bsky.social is impressive and thought provoking
