On top of this, there's the display issue and calibration issue. I suspect the vast majority of people with HDR displays have HDR configured poorly or not at all, and most HDR displays have poor HDR reproduction anyways. That's on top of the standard being messy technically...

messing around with HDR, it's a pain

HDR stuff is kind of a minefield and there's not a clear answer as to what "good" HDR is supposed to be. A lot of HDR enthusiasts would probably disagree with Markus' preferences as well. My personal HDR preferences are pretty trashy - I just like bright things for the most part.

...and on top of significant artistic disagreements over the role of an HDR grade compared to an SDR grade. It's just a huge mess. And I say this as someone who enjoys HDR content very much.

Got to get out and shoot some forest shots today, was fun to experiment with some HDR composition.

I wish HDR worked properly on first party Nintendo games. Third party games work perfectly on switch 2, but Nintendo still doesn't know how HDR works themselves

Some games are intended to look hazy or dull in HDR conditions. Some of the subjectively most exciting and pleasing HDR presentations I've seen in games have come from titles that were graded using some form of SDR to HDR mapping, which can produce a great appearance if calibrated properly.

Another shot from today, also HDR (3 shots combined into one, with different exposures in order to get detail in the light and dark areas)

HDR photos keep their extra brightness through an edit in Photo Hall™ and show in HDR on a screen that can display it. https://photohall.online/?src=bluesky #HDR #photography

Il a aussi dû vouloir faire une HDR avant de se lancer sur le marché de l'emploi ☝️

That's one conception of "good HDR" and I'd generally agree with that myself. But some games are calibrated with HDR presentations that closely match their SDR presentations, because the SDR presentation is the intended presentation of the game.

Some TVs offer HDR but aren’t bright enough to actually display HDR.

HDR is a very messy display standard and the wide variation in HDR panel capabilities makes it even messier. Plus, presentation on YouTube is challenging and requires a bunch of judgment calls that can make it look off even on reasonably capable HDR panels.
