HeartWand device design is nearly complete, pending microphone component adjustment (we had to switch to an analog mic as digital wasn't capturing low enough frequencies). The HeartWand enclosure's design is being modified to accommodate physical differences from the switch to the new analog board, as well as final changes on the electronics fixture attachment system (handle insert). As mentioned in the last couple updates, mobile software development progress on HeartSafe is accelerating thanks to finally finding a capable contractor. We have also engaged with another expert to help with mobile user interface and interaction design. Some of the app subsystems are complex and we are taking great care to ensure the app not only functions in a simple and easy way for you, but is completely free of defects. The first version of HeartSafe will include the necessary and sufficient subset of features that allow you to use the system for basic activities -- an "MVP" (Minimum Viable Product) in software development parlance. The app will be incrementally updated with additional functionality in the future as we continue to improve the HeartSafe app after initial release. With respect to firmware that controls the hardware devices, we've started to look again for expert help. While attempts to engage with contractors on firmware development have failed multiple times, we have learned from our mistakes and are being very careful. I was able to write firmware that exercised the devices for FCC testing (that we got approval for!). However, I have been slowing down as complexity increases. Producing a general market consumer electronics device is not just about well designed electrical hardware -- the firmware needs to execute reliably, performing stand-alone functions and wirelessly interacting with a wide range of mobile systems (different platforms, operating system versions, and phone capabilities). Here too, we are developing an MVP subset of functions; the ability to update firmware over time will be included in the first release and we'll add to the capabilities of the devices over time. In addition to hardware, software, and firmware development, there are other needs for bringing a consumer electronics product to market. Electronics manufacturing will continue to be done by Unexpected Maker; I still marvel at the great good fortune of working with Seon. We have production facilities set up in house (literally) for printing enclosures and internal structures for devices, as well as sufficient miscellaneous parts to produce 100 units on our "assembly line" in the garage. However, the packaging and documentation for HeartLight has not been designed yet; we intend to find professional help for this at some point but it may be another thing I have to figure out and do myself (good help is hard to find in this domain as well). We also have yet to design and print labels for the HeartLight baseplate, though the company that can do this has been found. Because of the special shape of the baseplate surface -- round with multiple button and central holes -- we need a (costly) custom label die cutter. This year, we have invested an increasing amount of time and money in HeartLight, with the goal of finishing as soon as possible. While we raised some money from "friends and family" in 2021, there has been no revenue and the company has been self-financed, other than this small Indiegogo campaign. With the departure of the CEO in 2022, the company consists of only myself (Paul) and my wife (Lorelei). We have put everything we could into HeartLight from the beginning in 2019 and we will continue to do so. For example, last year alone we spent over $40,000 on HeartLight. I have been working as a full time consultant (sometimes 60 hour weeks) and doing what I can nights and weekends to continue advancing HeartLight. Thanks to good fortune this year, the amount of our personal capital available to accelerate production has increased and we are taking advantage of that opportunity. Given all the above then, what's our current estimate for HeartLight completion and delivery to you? If all goes as planned, we anticipate shipping mid-2026. Our bulk order of custom length wire harnesses arrived today. Each of them is sized to fit the electronics assembly and enclosures with a little slack so the wire tips in the connectors aren't stressed. At the top is the HeartWand harness, which connects the microphone and main boards. This one was tricky to size, as it needs to provide just enough additional slack to move the fixture around a little as it is being inserted into the handle. On the right is the short LED board harness, connecting it to the main HeartLight board. The bottom bin has harnesses for connecting the button board to the main board. Here we need 12 wires to handle 6 buttons and the USB connector. You can also see the new batteries, which are attached with connectors now rather than inserted wires, to increase reliability. We use the same battery model for both devices. An SD card for the HeartLight is at the middle left. While they cost a bit more, we decided to use name brand "industrial" grade cards (Class 10, UHS-I), designed for high performance and durability, to ensure your HeartLight storage is as reliable as possible. The cards are 8 Gb and you'll be able to store as many heartbeats as you want -- over 24 hours of audio can be saved on a single HeartLight!
