If I remember correctly , the book "Zen at war" (I don't have my copy anymore) argues that this "amoral" version of Zen is quite recent, post-Meiji. Of course, it was amplified by people like D.T. Suzuki, who was close to Heidegger. I read in your post that Tanabe was too, which I find funny.

I will repeat that, 20 years ago, Heidegger was a set text for advanced nursing practitioners in my country. And we wonder where reactionary health woo ("MAHA" and its equivalents in other countries) comes from. This kind of "choose your own reality" postmodernism.
This take is actually rather controversial in my realm of philosophy, not because its wrong, but because people have built careers writing about reactionary thinkers as cute intellectual projects. The realty is that Heidegger promotes an anti-universalist obscurantism the privileges individual

(In fairness, the few Heidegger scholars I know don't try to do that; they aren't interested in embracing his full world-view. This makes it easier for them to give a full analysis of one of his ideas and then examine the prospects for extricating it from fascism)

High Decoupling: Philosophers do this when discussing figures like Heidegger and my response is usually some form of "If your trade is thinking really hard and you end up being a Nazi then maybe your ideas are Nazi-like." You can decouple idea from source somewhat, but not as much as people think
