We still call ourselves Romioi (Romans) sometimes and Hellenism "Romioisini" (Romanness).
But yeah, as some Greek authors have written, Greece has two souls: a classical, rationalist one and a Byzantine, spiritual one. We're both western and eastern.

can’t even really find any support online because any discussion just immediately devolves into terminological bickering. as a pagan i’m used to this but man at least the people who say “hellenic polytheism” don’t generally go around ostracising you and calling you a bigot if you say “hellenism”

On #ThisDayInHistory in 361, emperor #ConstantiusII died. On his deathbed he had been baptised a Christian and chose #Julian as his successor. Little did he know that #JulianTheApostate would quickly renounce Christianity, reinvigorate pagan Hellenism, rehabilitate the Jews, etc.

During the development of German Idealism in the late 18th century, there was a form of idealized Hellenism that was how German philosophers and intellectuals imagined Hellenism.
They developed the idea that under Hellenism, people were unified in Reason with Nature.

Hellenism was like that. The acropolis in Athens had a temple to the unknown god, just in case they had missed one or in case of there being gods they hadn't met yet, they didn't want any gods to feel forgotten or excluded.

If looking for a religion where women are equal to men, try Wicca, Druidry, Heathenry, or Hellenism. Most contemporary pagan and neopagan traditions are deeply egalitarian. Christianity isn’t.
