However, two were still habitable. Near the point of the peninsula, cabins 1 and 3 had been rescued from decay. Two men were set up in cabin 1 when I arrived, but 3 was empty. That was my home last night. I could not exactly see the attraction at first. These were no luxury accommodations.

today for #twopageplustuesday, another poem by Carl R. Martin: “Poe ambling through streets of Baltimore in the drunk election crowd/ or the donkey whose tail stands up, his profile that belies the moon. […] I have no promises to keep except to love & die & dream,/ to tend the dryads in the trees…”

Went to get some hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) samples from one of our infested hemlock sites. Good news: I couldn't find any HWA. Bad news: It is because all of the hemlocks are basically dead. 😭😭😭😭😭😭

When the nor'easters come through like this with the high wind gusts, I have to hold my breath for a couple days because of all the tall old hemlocks and maples around the house. It's been a dry year and wet leafy branches are much more likely to fall.

Pretty typical old growth hemlock-hardwood forest in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Lots of white pine and hemlocks with maples mixed in.

Just a few miles up the road the hemlocks and giant white pine along the Headwaters Wilderness' Giant White Pine Loop were nearly unscathed. bsky.app/profile/nxno...
Look up, young man. You're walking amongst giants.

A better view of one of the giant hemlocks lying on the forest floor.

The same day that a tornado ravaged Wisconsin's Fox Valley, straight line winds took down hundreds of trees in the
Nicolet National Forest. One of my favorite hikes was a bit somber seeing these centuries old Hemlocks broken like twigs.

Our king of trees (red cedar) stands about 100' tall in the center of our yard with hemlocks, a holly tree, maples, cherries alder, hazelnuts, madrona and others

This #NationalTreeDay & #NationalForestWeek we’re launching a campaign to help save Eastern Hemlocks. They are under threat from Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an invasive insect that can rapidly kill mature trees.

📖 THE COMING OF NIGHT.
👤 Dickinson, Emily (1830—1886)

How the old mountains drip with sunset,
And the brake of dun!
How the hemlocks are tipped in tinsel
By the wizard sun!
How the old steeples hand the scarlet,
Till the ball is full, —
Have I the lip of the flamingo

Advantages of old-growth forests include greater biodiversity & richer, more complex soil that isn't compacted the way many second-growth areas are compacted. All of that can affect how fast hemlocks grow.

The swamp enjoys showing off its pinewood gingertails colonizing all of its the dead hemlocks every autumn, but what's not been mentioned yet is that they're always full of mites. #FungiFriends #arachnids #ento

That makes sense.

There's a stand of 100-year old hemlocks in my home town, but they aren't significantly bigger than other trees in the area.
