Welcome Herugavialis!!

Was very lucky to be commissioned to illustrate this Miocene crocodilian 🙂

The fossil of Herugavialis is missing the tip of its snout, not unlike the Great Sphinx with whom it shares its rocky origins.

An extinct crocodilian was found among rocks that built the Great Sphinx
Herugavialis is the new name for a fossil found in the same rocks that built the Great Sphinx. The reptile is a unique branch of the gharial family tree.

Scientists have identified a new species of extinct crocodile called Herugavialis cairensis, which lived in present-day Egypt.

They studied a sample from around 50 million years ago, when much of what is now Northern Africa was underwater.

CT scans helped determine that the fossil unearthed in Egypt came from a distinctly different ancient species.

I sometimes wonder if we're going to run out of fossils to find in places that don't require digging up a lot of foliage, & then I see stories like this and realize their will always be new rocks worth splitting open, even in places I thought throughly searched.
