The elegant (and IMO very VERY sexy) high-button boots worn by Victorian and Edwardian women were typically very closely fitted to the wearer's ankles and calves, so much so that the buttons - oftn too small to be efficently grasped by fingers - required a special device called a button hook in order for the wearer to properly fasten her boots. The image at left, likely from the 1890's (as indicated by the huge "leg of mutton" sleeves on the blouse) shows an attractive young dark-haired woman, wearing a fancy hat, a high-necked white blouse with "leg of mutton" sleeves, and a dark skirt, fastening her low-heeled, high-button boots, reaching up to her calves, on her black-stockinged legs (and raising her skirt to do show, exposing her lace-trimmed petticoat), using a buttonhook to pull each button through the corresponding buttonhole. Advertisement for elegant late-Edwardian ladies’ boots (probably 1910’s judging from the female silhouettes in the background) in white canvas with fancy cut-out decorations on the sides, buttoned straps and “Louis” heels (so-called for their resemblance to French shoe heels of the 18th century). Skirts were beginning to get shorter in the 1910’s, up to ankle/lower-calf length, and these boots were definitely made for walking - and showing off!
