It was a pleasure to review this recording of Hindemith and Shostakovich violin concertos for this month's Gramophone. Alexandra Tirsu's performance of the superb Hindemith concerto is even finer than the recording Oistrakh made with the composer.

1938 floh das Ehepaar Hindemith zunächst in die Schweiz, nachdem die Nazis die Sängerin, Schauspielerin und Managerin ihres Ehemanns Gertrud Hindemith antisemitisch bedroht und seine Musik als "kulturbolschewistisch" und "entartet" gebrandmarkt hatten.
Paul and Gertrud Hindemith in front of their home on Alden Ave. in New Haven. He taught at Yale from 1940 to 1953. While attending graduate school there decades later, I'd sometimes adjust my running routes so I could see it, fascinated by its utter plainness.
