Sorry, didn't realize that should have had a spoiler alert.

Which is to say: you as a human are frightfully and wonderfully made, your consciousness is sui generis and cannot be artificially replicated, and science fiction's preoccupation with a Titanomachia between biological life and machine life is just retelling our early myths in new forms.

I find this arhument unconvincing; bsky.app/profile/hipc... argues that it is impossible for a human to build intelligence. But it provides no reasoning for this.
Which is not to say that machine intelligence is per se impossible; it is perfectly possible that a machine can and will learn to think in a subjective, conscious way through the same process that generated human (and presumably other) sapience: time and evolution.

I think it is strange to say that the exp "definitively" answers the q when Jackson himself no longer thinks it works.

That doesn't mean he is necessarily right of course, there are those who still think it does (eg Chalmers) but it does suggest it's not so definitive

bsky.app/profile/hipc...
And while all of that is true, it misses the point. The point of qualia is not the physical facts about perception, but rather the QUALITY of it TO a subject. Frank Jackson's famous "Mary" argument definitively answers this question.

For my part my concern with the "Mary" exp is it is q begging. Does Mary learn anything new? Maybe not, but that depends on idea that qualia is not the kind of thing she could learn about except through perception. The very thing the thought experiments seeks to demonstrate

I'm not going to go into detail. It would take to long but for example take this.

I think it is far too strong even if you think the Mary thought experiments raised interesting questions to say it "definitively" answers anything.

I can share this longer thread if you're looking for something from a philosophical level.

It seems like this is a good time to tell you all why LLMs are never, and can never be, conscious.
Are AI companies being extremely irresponsible with incomplete and badly defined parameters for their LLMs? Yes!

Are they unwittingly creating Skynet? No. Grow up. Come on

Will is absolutely correct here, and he points out what critics of Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment miss when they veer into functionalism and behavioralism.
It doesn't even know that facts look like, it statistically approximates what a genre of document and sentence structure looks like at best.

Couple things here. Again, if you're being sold software, you have to understand what you're being sold. At least in Texas, we haven't had a case define software as a "good" or chattel. Sure, software is often contained on some form of physical media, but that's just a copy of it...

Ah yes, Bugs Bunny, famous respecter of gender norms.
The two genders are Bugs and Women. And yeah I’m pretty sure there was a national debate about which washrooms people were allowed to use in whatever town Bugs is supposed to be in there.

this is just bourgeois "lifestyle anarchism" that adopts the language of being against hierarchy while donning the clothes of the oppressor: bsky.app/profile/hipc...
12/ Bookchin's charge in "Social Anarchism or Lifestyle Anarchism": the absorption of bourgeois individualism into the radical scene. The self as project, autonomy as consumption, rebellion as aesthetic. The podcast-bro left is lifestyle anarchism with a class vocabulary.

Anyway, I asked Zerzan how he arrived in Austin, and the answer was "by plane." I nodded, got up and left.

As I said in this thread: bsky.app/profile/hipc...
1/ Watch the structure of what's being celebrated here, not the slogans. It's a tribune model, and the tribune model, whatever its vocabulary, reproduces exactly the domination it claims to oppose. Bookchin saw why. 🧵 (READ MORE THEORY)

Because it’s the same old motherfuckers trying to co-opt a proletarian movement to continue their same bourgeois bullshit. Don’t fall for it.

It sure *sounds* like we’re supposed to live in a world where working class men can be toxic and awful and we should embrace that’s as authentic, and working class women presumably simply get abused. And that’s supposed to be ok.

The problem with your argument is that it's just not parody under TRADEMARK (read: not copyright) law. Parody under trademark law has to comment or criticize the original brand, like if I made a Coca-Cola can with "SUGAR BOMB" in the Coke font.
