🥁HOKO-MOCHI🔔

One of the most anticipated sweets of the festival is Kagijin's (かぎ甚) 'hoko-mochi' (鉾餅). Available only in July, the sweet resembles the roof covering of the Naginata-hoko (長刀鉾), the first float to parade in the Gion Matsuri.

New Nudel on the block: Was in meiner kleinen Druckerei noch fehlte war tatsächlich eine Nudel. Nudeln werden die einfachsten Zylinderpressen bezeichnet, bei denen man den Andruckzylinder ohne Farbwerk über Form und Papier zieht. Meine erwartete mich heute nach der Arbeit, eine 40-50kg Hohner HOKO 2

1) NAGINATA-HOKO (長刀鉾)⚔️

The Naginata-hoko always leads the Gion Matsuri's first parade, the 'Saki Matsuri' (先祭り). As it is exempt from the lottery to determine the position of the floats, it was known in the past as 'Kuji-torazu' (くじ取らず 'Lot-drawing Not Necessary').

The Naginata-hoko (長刀鉾) always leads the Gion Matsuri's Saki-no-Matsuri (先祭り), the first and largest of the 2 parades.

The float's name comes from the long halberd that rises from its roof to drive away evil. Nowadays it is the only float upon which a sacred page ('chigo') rides.

The Gion Matsuri's float musicians, 'hikiko' (曳き子 - float pullers), 'ondotori' (音頭取り - cheerleaders), and even those selling float goods, dress in clothing unique to the 34 'yamaboko'.

Thirty four floats currently participate in the Gion Matsuri’s (祇園祭) two parades. This number was far higher in the past, but conflagrations and economic considerations have seen many of the yamahoko disappear over the centuries.

Hoka-hoko & Ayakasa-hoko Floats at the Gion Matsuri
Among the 23 floats, each has a unique shape. Hoka-hoko has a seat for musicians to play the bamboo flute, while Ayakasa-hoko does not — instead, a dancer with red hair performs in front of the float during the procession.

The Naginata-hoko (長刀鉾 aka Naginata-boko), the best known of the floats, opens and then leads the Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行).

Nowadays it is the only float upon which a 'sacred page' (稚児 'chigo') rides. Originally all hoko floats (鉾) would have had their own chigo.
