D took a deep breath and reached into the Threads of the automaton, ripping them apart until he found the ones tied to its energy source. Pulling on those, he could sense an amethyst crystal. It had been heavily charged. The Threads woven around it were sparking with energy that now had no outlet to escape to. D transferred all of the Threads to one fist, then snapped his fingers in the triplicate snap. The crystal was yanked through the machine’s cheap metal exterior to join the Threads in his hand. Without its power source, the machine stopped moving completely. D continued to wind the Threads around the crystal, pulling the ones that had been holding it together until no more were attached. The armor crumbled into its separate pieces. D inhaled, gathering strength and balling the Threads around the crystal tighter and tighter until it was flashing with energy, then he threw it onto the armor.

Soon after they meet, D and Holly are trapped in a fae slip—a mysterious, silent forest, when Holly asks an unexpected question.

It was so silent that D almost jumped when Holly spoke. “Can I… can I ask you something?” “I suppose,” D replied, frowning as he tugged again at the Threads surrounding them, seeing if any would move to reveal a way back Above. As if mocking him, they pulled slightly before snapping back into place. He made an annoyed sound as he dropped them. “Your um… your magic… how does it work?” “You mean Threads?” he asked, looking down at her suspiciously. "You don't know?" “Is that what it’s—what it’s called?” Her eyes flicked up to him then quickly back to the path. “S-sorry, I’m… really—really ignorant about this kind of stuff, I—I guess…” “And yet you were able to summon me, and quite cleanly,” D replied, raising a brow at her. “That doesn’t really say ‘ignorance.’” “Hmm.” Holly looked away from him, wrinkling her nose slightly. D's eyes narrowed further, and he stopped walking. I won’t let her off so easily. I deserve answers. D turned to look at her fully. She had also stopped as well, and turned towards him, but was facing away, giving the impression of a petulant child about to be scolded. He crossed his arms. “Explain how you were able to do so, then.”

“But you know, D? Even though, next to him, we’ve seen her the most, she’s—she's been the most active, but I really don’t know who the purple woman is. Even though Grandmother was researching, she never seemed to—seemed to find anything out about her. Mom…” she paused. “Mom thought that maybe she wasn’t a relative at all. But Aoife says she looks like me…” D nodded. “I would agree with Aoife’s assessment. You have similar facial structure.” Holly wrinkled her nose. “Poor her, then…” D had flicked her ear with two fingers before he even realized he was doing it, as easily as when C would correct him. He tried to play it off just as casually as she looked up at him with wide eyed surprise. “Stop that. I don’t want to hear you speak badly of my summoner.” “Your…” Unexpectedly, she giggled. “Ri…right… I’ll do my—my best.”

Holly and D have found a library in the Mason mansion, but is it THE library?

#macaronwip #wipsnips #hollyandD
“I don't sense any illusions." D tucked his glasses back into the inner pocket and tapped his chin thoughtfully as he ran his eyes over the nearest shelves again. As Holly had stated, the books were on global affairs and biographies, all very normal, and very human subjects. This is really a powerful sorcerer's library? There doesn't even seem to be a section on folklore or religion, as misguided as most human books on those subjects are. C has said that knowing how people are misinformed is just as useful as knowing what facts they do understand. Wouldn't a sorcerer know that? D turned back to Holly, who was standing in a bit of an exaggerated display of obedience with her hands clasped behind her back to prove she was not touching anything without permission. The pose was making her chest protrude in a very interesting way that D was not allowing himself to be interested in. and the heavy dust resting on it. "You may be correct in that it is an average library. Still, its complete lack of anything pertaining to a sorcerer's interests almost seems more suspect.” “You—you think so? I actually think it—it makes sense for it to be—to be normal, like this. May I move again, sir?” D felt his jaw twitch as he tried to avoid turning to give her a withering look. "You no longer have to ask. There is nothing dangerous in this room." "Thank you, sir," Holly said, but her tone had lost its previous, sassy edge. She walked over to the desk by a window. “It's safe for me to—to touch things now too, right?” D nodded, forcing himself to turn back to look at her just in case she found a way to make them unsafe. Thankfully, she was leaning over the desk in a way that obscured her tight shirt, her hands gracefully shifting some of the dusty items on it. One of them was a folded newspaper, and she opened it carefully and laid it on the desk.
