Heh, you know what they say about people with red hair...most likely they are homozygous for a recessive allele on chromosome 16 that produces an altered version of the MC1R protein.

As the article says, this cannot be generalized yet: it takes a full stem cell transplant from a donor who carries a very specific genetic variant that only a small percentage of the population is homozygous for, and stem cell transplants are risky and hard to match donors for already.

As the article says, this cannot be generalized yet: it takes a full stem cell transplant from a donor who carries a very specific genetic variant that only a small percentage of the population is homozygous for, and stem cell transplants are risky and hard to match donors for already.

At the very least, any cat that tests homozygous for the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy defect should not be bred. Period. They will always pass it on. Maine Coon and ragdoll breeders could have been doing this for years now.
