A fine steel Persian axehead I cleaned up for a collector. Likely from the early 1800s, this showed a facetted shaft, carved blades and an interesting pattern welding to the steel.

Weirdly, perhaps, hoplology is probably the historical topic my shelves are lightest on. Don't even have McBalls festschrift.

This is the most important news out of this release.
These sound novels are historically fascinating, compelling games that play with form and I love them.
It's a miracle we're getting them and everyone should learn why in this episode of my podcast:

Am I a history dad if I don't have hot takes on wars? I've never been able to take hoplology seriously. I mean, it's got lol right there in the middle.

Alright, @sarahebond.bsky.social in her cruelty has made me aware of this remarkably incompetent talk Malcolm Gladwell gave and so I am going to inflict it on all of you by going through all of the mistakes he makes here in the hope that none of you will ever take him seriously again. 1/

A friend more inclined to hoplology than I observed that this was not a usually tenable defensive position, since it put the Greeks in danger of getting their asses shot off, but suggested that this might have been an early application of gas warfare.
