more details. the 85mm tilt shift Micro Nikkor is used with all the views, with both tilts used to control plane of focus and shifts used to center image.

these first photos were done using Speedotron strobes, I switched to hotlights for further details. but there's basically no difference in end result. the hotlights are just easier to shape.

Used by tv crews and photo studios as a result of being used for decades. hotlights are about the best way to learn lighting

using studio strobes or trying to do fill flash can be tough with high base ISOs. in the early 2000s we had to use ND filters outside to do fill flash. it sucked. I remember trying to use that first camera in studio and having to bleed power off the Speedotrons to no avail so I had to use hotlights

here are a couple of work trips for shooting objects on location. one using strobes, the other I used Lowel hotlights specifically to avoid "mission drift" where you are asked to shoot things other than what originally requested. these were van load trips

Another studio setup from this day back in 2018. I was working on an exhibit about toys. I did most of that work using hotlights and drew inspiration from vintage catalog photos. One thing about having a staff library is access to old catalogs. With focusing fixtures you can shape the light.

some studio work from this day back in 2017. I had a few TV sets to shoot. this is pretty much straight up furniture catalog work, using focusing hotlights shaped to provide highlights on the object, with a "top light" for fill. a lot of black is used to "cut" the reflections into the wood.

It gets more complicated the more elements are added. the more surfaces and planes. here you have a screen behind mixed in with brushed metal of the pistol. The firearm needs light whereas screen doesn’t. hotlights or continuous sources are easierlearn by with strobes you need modeling lamps

I had a patron request a few years ago from these researchers doing a guide to the M1 carbine. Had to do 21 details across three different WWII carbines to show the slight differences. I didn’t understand most, but that’s what curators are for. I did all those woth hotlights. the patrons couldn’t

these were done with the workhorse, D3X and 85mm PC Micro Nikkor, a combo I used for nearly a decade of studio work. hotlights were used. the first shot, I ran into an issue where the color was off on box fragment to the right so I corrected it on the light by using Rosco Cal Color gels

so before you plunk down the money on a macro lens check that out. see what the close focusing distance is and reproduction ratio if you can get that information. also vibration-- a solid mount helps. I used to use hotlights a lot in studio with the D3X and did 1-2+ sec. exposures. use self timer

a pair of July 29th pix from studio using hotlights from 2016, working on a WWI book. first up is the old trick of hiding a mount behind an object. next is a straight forward record shot with a lot of softlight and fill cards. I was working with a designer for this request.

the overall here was done using Speedotron strobes instead of hotlights. the set here was the one from other day that I posted of the Colt 45 & holster. when you use acrylic like this with a polarizer you can control the reflection on surface of the acrylic sheet. this creates an illusion of sorts.

here this was how I did the view master reel. this was a few years ago. used the D3X and an old 105 Micro Nikkor on a macro bellows stage. the light was a speedotron studio strobe. it didn't need to be super powerful, it's just that what we use in studio. I edit Nikon using Capture NX. always have.
