Never mind HS2 delays: what about the abandoned British *hovertrain*?
RTV 31 – The Hovertrain, an ambitious 1970s project that was to revolutionise land travel in Britain.

Scientists, engineers and technicians from Cambridgshire developed the technology alongside Professor Eric Laithwaite in their bid to see the dream of high-speed land travel become a reality.

I like the way Google Street View allows you to do a "then and now". It's not exactly the same angle, but close. And it rather confirms that the passing hovertrain shown below (!) did at least make it through town.

The remains of RTV31 near Peterborough; a hovertrain conceived in the 1960s with a target speed of 400 km/hr. I see it every time I take the train from London to Lincoln. A bit of a Thunderbirds feel to it !
