We could have had direct services from Birmingham and Manchester to several European destinations, finally realising the vision from this 1992 advert.

Stephen's right of course. One of the most jaw-dropping pieces of information which emerged as the project fell on its arse was that the boss of HS1 offered to help on HS2 and was turned down.
