I think a big part of it harkens back to when this game first came out and it was essentially FFXI 2. The original races (all except viera, au ra, and htothgar) are basically copies of the races they used for FFXI and they never stepped outside of that design formula save for hrothgars.

Was she to be seen as Christian an Htothgar not? The author’s potential use of religion for an unknown (to up) purpose is one of my favorite topics.
