Today in OCR/HTR fun: I'm working with entity extraction over an HTR corpus, and the entity extraction differentiated between versions of the term with and without a superscript "t" -- so "War Dept" and "War Dept" are different entities.

Attached image is the latter, in different hands.

I'm giving @martin.rocek.dev a headache with lots of requests for Translucens, but soon we'll have a bunch of QoL improvements for you.

Personally love the binarizarion preview. Super useful for preparing our ground truth for the HTR Winter School!

👋 Hello, this is the Digital Orientalist again, still on our takeover week! We share our digital toolbox with medievalists: same HTR, the same pipelines. What changes, once you turn those tools on non-Western manuscripts, is the method. This thread is about where these approaches meet and part.🧵

For this first day, I'll start with one of the key tools in DH, Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), which is useful beyond the fields covered by The DO. Here’s a short tour of what’s available and how HTR works. 🧵👇
October 6, 2026 at 11:19 AM
What is HTR? It consists of a deep-learning model that turns an image of handwriting into editable, searchable text, predicting the characters from patterns it was trained on. It is the close cousin of OCR: the difference is simply that OCR reads printed sources, while HTR reads handwritten ones.

Beyond HTR: if your work leans on annotation or network analysis rather than transcription, two accessible open tools are worth a look. Recogito, for annotating texts and images (places, people), and Gephi, for visualising networks.
October 6, 2026 at 11:19 AM
Start with how HTR works. The model reads a page a line at a time, so it must first locate those lines, a step called segmentation. It learned this on the Latin alphabet, where the script runs left to right, letters stand in sequence, and spaces divide the words. For Latin, the assumptions hold.

None of this is unique to my project; conventions are a running theme at The DO. Rachael Griffiths shows it in HTR for Tibetan, and it recurs well beyond OCR: TEI and cataloguing, standards for selmantic-web networks, metadata for Coptic resources, and interoperability in Indian-language archives.

Our own response was to align with an existing, semi-normalised standard (OpenITI / Dabīrān), to preserve alternative readings instead of forcing a single one, and to freeze the HTR test set only once the convention had stabilised. We document it and version it, like any other scholarly decision.
