“Peter Hujar flourished artistically as the recorder of his own milieu of artists, writers, and especially performers: the reticent observer reveling in the performative exuberance of others.” —Alan Hollinghurst
The Elusive Glamour of Peter and Paul | Alan Hollinghurst
A dual biography of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek is a tantalizing portrait of the artists and their epoch, just before the catastrophe of AIDS.

“To read an individual, or a milieu, through photographs can be, at its best, to see deep and to know how fragile the chance of such a revelation was.” —Alan Hollinghurst

‘Peter Hujar loved to cruise. Many of his non-studio photographs depict the waterfront piers, abandoned buildings and parks where he met men.’

‘By the 1970s Peter Hujar had mostly stopped doing commercial work. He survived on canapés at parties, canned soup and the “generosity of his friends”.’

‘Peter Hujar’s photographs are empathetic: they dignify his sitters, and his gentler use of black and white makes his subjects seem, at times, like subjects in a Renaissance portrait.’

For the most part, Ben Whishaw doesn't look like Peter Hujar, who he plays in Ira Sachs' Peter Hujar's Day. In this image, however, Hujar looks so much like Whishaw that I assumed it WAS him. From Andrew Durbin's review of The Wonderful World that Almost Was: A Life of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek.

‘Sontag’s 𝘖𝘯 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 came out in 1977. Peter Hujar told a friend that it made him never want to take another photograph. He’s not mentioned in it – he feared it was because she didn’t think him famous enough.’

Peter Hujar at The Morgan Library. There were wonderful magnifying glasses for you to carry with you to look at the print sheets.

Also a wonderful display of past exhibits downstairs.

Hujar right in both counts. Hujar is a great artist and Mapplethorpe’s work is forgettable kitsch. From Em Hogan’s review of The Wonderful World that Almost Was: A Life of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek in @lrb.co.uk

I was calmed down by my compassion saying said friend is related to Howard Hughes, was in a bizzare scam marriage and now mostly makes art masks for rich furries of course he looks like someone Hujar would photograph

Then went to the Peter Hujar show and was so unnerved that one photograph looked so much like my friend I felt compelled to txt him you’d tell me if you’re vampire right
