Proud to share our latest published work on moisture responsive root development-a process we call hydropatterning! We find that this process has been under differential selection during maize breeding and the gaseous hormone ethylene prevents branching in air.

Diversity and genetic basis of hydropatterning in inbred maize lines | Plantae
For more than a hundred years, plant biologists have been fascinated by how plants sense and respond to environments that are spatially and temporally heterogenous. Many of these responses occur…

It's so fucking funny to me that there's still no agreed upon mechanism about whether hydropatterning is about reorientation of existing primordium or Stage 1 making a decision to grow or not on either side.
Excited to share our latest review on hydrosignaling: moisture-dependent molecular pathways that help plants grow towards water. Insightful review of the literature and discussion of moisture sensing mechanisms by Will Dwyer and @hhtormar.bsky.social. Enjoy!

How Do Plant Roots Sense and Respond to Water? 💧

Plants don’t just passively absorb water—they actively sense and respond to moisture availability.

Their roots exhibit hydrotropism, xerobranching, and hydropatterning, allowing them to adapt to water stress and optimize resource uptake.
Roles of hormones in regulating root growth–water interactions
This review highlights recent advances in understanding hormone-mediated mechanisms underlying root responses to water stress.

2. This divergence likely reflects different historical selection pressures during modern breeding.

3. Auxin promotes root branching toward moisture, while ethylene suppresses branching on air-exposed root surfaces.

Maize #roots actively pattern new branches toward water (hydropatterning), but this response differs across varieties.

Some key findings:

1. Maize shows genetic diversity in hydropatterning, with tropical/subtropical lines exhibiting stronger responsive root branching.
