The owner of a Troy medical facility where a 5-year-old boy died in January in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber explosion has posted bond, officials said. Tamela Peterson, the owner and founder of the Brighton-based Oxford Center, posted a $2 million bond on Wednesday, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Peterson and three of her employees were arraigned last month on charges stemming from the boy's death. Authorities allege the four disregarded safety protocols and failed to follow the manufacturer's recommended guidelines for the hyperbaric chamber in which he was killed. During the hearing, a magistrate ordered that if they post bond, they must have no contact with each other, not return to the Oxford Centers in Troy or Brighton, must wear GPS tethers and cease operating hyperbaric chambers. On Thursday, officials said Peterson was ordered to have no contact with the victims’ family and can only leave her home for medical, court or legal appointments. She was also required to surrender her passport and any weapons. Troy police said the explosion happened before 8 a.m. on Jan. 31 at The Oxford Center, located at 165 Kirts Boulevard near Livernois Road and Interstate 75. A hyperbaric oxygen chamber at the facility exploded and left 5-year-old Thomas Cooper of Royal Oak dead. Thomas was on his 36th treatment out of 40 in the hyperbaric chamber, which creates a pressurized environment of pure oxygen, when it exploded. His mother, standing nearby, tried to rescue the boy and was burned on her arms. Police have not revealed what he was being treated for. Peterson was charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter charges. Employees Gary Marken, the Oxford Center's primary manager, and Jeffrey Mosteller, the company's safety director, were arraigned on the same charges. They face up to life in prison for the murder charge and up to 15 years for the manslaughter charge. Aleta Moffitt, who was the hyperbaric chamber's operator when it exploded, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and intentionally placing false information on a medical record. All four defendants pleaded not guilty. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office is handling the case. Late last month, Mosteller, Moffitt, and Marken all posted bond. Also late last month, two Michigan lawmakers said they plan to introduce legislation this spring that would regulate hyperbaric chambers after Thomas's death. Michigan does not require any oversight of hyperbaric chambers, which prompted state Sen. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, and Rep. Sharon MacDonell, D-Troy, to start drafting such legislation in a bid to prevent similar tragedies.
