Hypercalcaemia! Noooooo!
October 18, 2026 at 5:23 PM
I wish someone would teach my GP about parathyroid glands. Hypercalcaemia is no fun on top of severe ME, POTS, COPD, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis and hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome to name but a few. Sick of being sick.

We have threshold referral criteria which include blood work; for routine referrals.
One of the first cases of depression I came across as a student was a lady I saw during the medicine block at the general hospital, weeks earlier. She had classic hypercalcaemia

Five years ago today I walked into my GP office to pick up a repeat prescription and didn’t come home until eleven days later. If not for the receptionist who was also a nurse, I might have died of acute hypercalcaemia.

guess who has hypercalcaemia again! haha it's me!

at least this time they caught it early, so i just had iv fluids at the chemo unit instead of having to stay in hospital.

and they had to postpone chemo, but only for a couple days. so we resume on wednesday, provided my bloods are looking better

from my discharge letter, turns out it was malignant hypercalcaemia, which can be life threatening if left untreated. now i can see why they were so insistent on all the iv fluids even though i wasn't especially dehydrated
aaaand the chemo nurse just called & said the oncologist just got today's blood test results back & wants me to be admitted for 24 hours. so now i have to pack & go back to the hospital 🙃

You're probably fine, but in case: Max recommended dose on those is real, too much calcium can screw you up. Have a friend of a friend who took too many, too regularly, and ended up in hypercalcaemia.

b) high rate of vitamin D deficiency in our unit; vitamin D was associated with both higher ALP and higher PTH c) increasing PTH threshold for extra calcium supplementation from 7 to 10 had no impact on PTH trajectory but was associated with reduction in severe hypercalcaemia 2/

“The Calcified Heart of Saint Ignace Battiste:” inspired by an 11 day stint in Glasgow Royal Infirmary for hypercalcaemia. GRI looks out onto the cathedral and necropolis.

Fun fact: i didn’t know about Percy Shelley’s heart when I wrote this.

CYP34A1 and -A3
Heterozygous or homozygous.
Hypophosphataemia (may be insidious leads to increase in calcitriol levels, leading to hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria to stones and neohrocalcinosis.

Then, suddenly, a googly is bowled

A bunch of possible risks are listed. BUT THE SOURCE IS NOT THE EVIDENCE REVIEWS.

Rather it is listed as "professional consensus exercise, July 2025". No details as to which professionals, how consensus was reached, etc. etc. etc.

Also, as per Ivan's advice on X re calcium intake, maybe speak to your GP about that. Hypercalcaemia generally indicates a serious underlying problem.

It's that time of year again! ☀️

As temperatures rise, many people affected by sarcoidosis are at a higher risk of health problems. Luckily there are many ways to stay cool and lessen the impact of the heat.
