seriously, remember how much heat Morrison got from those first four issue of JLA? the team coming together around Batman against the Hyperclan was the most thrilling JLA origin we’d ever seen. we were invested! JLU #1 reads like Waid just wanted the cartoon’s status quo back without delay.
I bought the first issues of JLU and the new Avengers West Coast, only really in the market to follow one of them going forward, JLU being so unexpectedly tepid made that choice quite simple

Here's the issue with The Authority in a world where the Justice League exists, and the Midnighter books never really address that.
What do they do? Cause they can't take over the world. Which is the only thing The Authority really did.

I've said it so many times, I don't know how the Authority WORKS in Mainlline DC, or who they're supposed to BE, or what they DO. By all rights, they should just be The Hyperclan or some shit. Just some weirdos that the JLA stomped their dicks into the dirt and forgot about.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. The Authority are big fish in a small pond. If they tried their bullshit in the DCU proper, they'd get shredded like wheat in like three issues and Flash would dunk on them for being a Hyperclan knockoff.
*ALL* of the Authority should be easy to beat.
They're never given a real challenge. Their "edge" is that they kill people, so writers just throw slews of stupid villains at them in order to be fed through the meat grinder.

I’m guessing the Authority won’t happen cause the best 1st villains for the League is Hyperclan. And I’m going to guess there is too much similarities. I’m guessing the Justice Gang will be who they first attack….

My LCS closed between the release of this issue and the next, and it took me a while to finally find the last chapter to see if the JLA could overcome the Hyperclan.

The bat-office insisted on a sparing use in Morrison’s JLA, which *definitely* helped him not overshadowing those early issues - and it sells the Hyperclan dismissing him as merely a human with weapons, right until the “ready when you are” moment

Ok. I’m guessing the reason that the Authority has been stalled is a) lots of the characters (like Midnighter and Apollo and Swift) are too similar to classics DC heroes. I also bet that the Hyperclan will be the villains of the JL movie & they are based on the Authority.

I still like the Hyperclan arc and the Tomorrow Woman issue, and I love the two part Zauriel/Azmodel story, but they rest of their run isn't really my taste anymore. Waid's run was what pulled me back in. I didn't care for the Kelly/Mahnke run at the time but I like it now
