The scientific method demands we test our hypotheses!

Even assuming an LLM stumbled into a revolutionary scientific discovery, it would only be an untested hypothesis. A lack of hypotheses is not science's problem - it's $$ for the research to test those hypotheses that's sorely needed. And, that's being cut to fund LLMs.
I just now realized that some guys think that fancy predictive text can make new scientific discoveries but that doesn’t even make sense.

On a systématiquement privilégié les hypothèses rassurantes et systématiquement c'est les hypothèses apocalyptiques qui se réalisent
The traditional model of a steady, linear climb in global temperatures is increasingly at odds with observations. We've relied on the ocean’s ability to act as a storage buffer for thermal energy. Recent data on Ocean Stratification indicates this buffer is undergoing a mechanical decoupling.

All False Consciousness hypotheses are essentially cope, for good or ill.

Step 1 = We keep doing this studies. They keep proving hypotheses.
Step 2 = We repeat the studies. And continue proving hypotheses.
Step 3 = Repeat step one.
A basic income program in central Iowa gave 110 people $500/mo. It caused improvements in savings, stress, and agency. It also found significant changes in scores relating to hope — the ability to create goals and feel capable of working toward them, and also increases in mattering and self-reliance
Iowa basic income program generates an outcome not found in other states: high levels of hope
Researchers presented their findings from the Central Iowa Basic Income Pilot in Des Moines. Their study looked at how participants used monthly $500 payments, and how it affected their well-being and...

This is one of my more tinfoil-hat-hypotheses, but in my defense, have you seen these people?

"There are many hypotheses in science which are wrong. That’s perfectly all right: it’s the aperture to finding out what’s right. Science is a self-correcting process."

Presumably an economist that creates and tests hypotheses.

This. All the way. Show us that you have rigorously tested your hypotheses. Let others reproduce them.
Why are people still telling scientists that we need to compromise with MAHA? How about if we tell MAHA that they can come to the table when they respect the scientific method instead.

Good heads up especially for media: do not take a bunch if correlations by motivated actors seriously. If they don’t preregister their hypotheses and data, chances are the results are spurious and cherry picked

One of the worst things about the Senate’s attempted Fauci show trial is how the supposed evidence against him is early in COVID he considered multiple hypotheses, then increasingly ruled some unlikely as evidence came in.

The objection is he did science. Fundamentally that is what’s under attack.

You like testing hypotheses, don't you?
June 25, 2024 at 9:55 AM
This is how science works, people. Test your hypotheses and follow evidence. They did that for SARS-COV2 and found NO EVIDENCE IT WAS ENGINEERED.
The accusation here is that Fauci pushed scientists to look into SARS-COV2 to see whether it was engineered. They did and found tons of evidence that it evolved naturally.

You'd think from the coverage that this was later debunked but no! It's science working as intended.

“He noted in the e-mail that he and his co-authors had been “prompted” in their efforts by Fauci, Collins, and Jeremy Farrar, then the leader of a major UK research institution called the Wellcome Trust…”

I love how they make the Wellcome Trust look like organised crime.
