What we’ve found so far is essentially the inverse of what we discovered when comparing handhelds: Windows usually has an edge in performance over SteamOS, and sometimes that gap is quite large.
SteamOS tested on dedicated GPUs: No, it’s not always faster than Windows
Ars testing shows SteamOS fares better on iGPUs than powerful graphics cards.

can someone pay me to write about how AMD's refusal to put RDNA4 iGPUs in their mobile chips makes the Z2E handhelds a complete nonstarter versus the MSI Claw that actually has proper upscaling built-in
October 15, 2025 at 11:13 PM
I understand PC hardware, and especially drivers, are a tricky subject to talk about and requires a certain level of expertise when discussing - but my first question to AMD would be about the Z2 A and Z2 Go, both chips using RDNA2 iGPUs that released this calendar year.

Is that true, though? Because scanning some of the GPUs in the Steam Hardware Survey gives some surprising statistics. 3% of players on Steam are running a GTX 1650; the same amount are running an RTX 3050. 2% are still on a 1060. 1.5% on a 1050 Ti. iGPUs are common.

"boo hoo Minecraft switching to Vulkan is going to kill old hardware"

Vulkan support for both Windows and Linux on Intel iGPUs goes as far back as Skylake from 2015. Vulkan is fully supported by AMD GPUs as far back as 2012 (GCN1), and by NVIDIA GPUs also from 2012 (Kepler).

Homophobia, plain and simple

Crimson Desert pops up a message and refuses to run if the user has an Intel Arc GPU.

As a graphics programmer who wasted a significant amount of my life, and damaged my business, trying to support their 3000 and 4000 IGPUs .. frankly, I can't blame them.
March 20, 2026 at 11:10 AM
agreed, plus these are only gonna get stronger. i bet we're just a few years out of steamdeck tier igpus being ubiquitous
July 19, 2026 at 10:42 PM
tbh you can run usable models on 32GB RAM igpus rn, not the most usable but i don't think they're going to longterm get _harder_ to run per a given resource allowance

Majority of laptops running linux have intel iGPUs. And many desktops without discrete GPUs
August 27, 2026 at 1:44 AM
I am the only person on this entire planet that thinks it would be nice if laptop manufacturers made a laptop that you can actually draw on and maybe even play a few games with. yeah I know Intel finally makes cpus with usable igpus but there are no laptops that use Wacom EMR

I was hoping DirectStorage would do alot for iGPUs, because the compression factor is 4 to 10 times, so you'd get up to 64GB/s on PCIe 4.0 drives and that's a ton for traditional iGPUs. Sad that it hasn't really panned out that way.
