Other than a random photo with Prof. B at my wedding, best was a 2011 iSchool headshot iSchool. My colleagues call it, "Steel" aka, Zoolander.

2nd best is my motorcycle picture.

Next official picture will be embroidered, Bayeux -level awesome, sans painful ocular issues.

A small but meaningful way LLMs are creating more work for academics: they’re making it harder to triage grad application season

In information science, students apply more directly to potential advisors—since moving to the iSchool, I get *lots* of inquiries from prospective PhD students every year

TBH I’m still disappointed that my iSchool experience did not include demonology, which I had assumed from watching Buffy would be an important part of the curriculum.

UT library school alum–not shocking. The program's been having some issues for a while (I wish I could remember the details, but they were relayed to me by a retired prof at Philly's ALA), and the new laws certainly didn't help it.

They also ruined the ischool and shoved it under another dept.

Like, I’m still doing linguistics long-term, but like 1/5 of the iSchool doctoral faculty are members of the Association for Computational Linguistics, I think there’s a stay-in-Seattle-avoid-Bender way through for me here after all

Amen! When I was teaching in an iSchool I used to say the command-line was the other way of operating the computer.

Hopefully this is a “things that have been percolating abruptly come together” frame shift because the plan clicking feels kind of out of nowhere but otoh “perhaps I could,,, go there,,,” seems like a natural response to “wow current project is citing a lot of UW iSchool research, what it mean”

I get a lot of these, which has always made me wish there was a better way for people to identify who can be an advisor in the iSchool vs. who is listed as affiliate faculty. I always write back, sorry, wish them luck, etc. It feels like such a hard way to have to do this.
