I tend to agree with you, but I also don't think many ibmers are in your sample set either

Good for IBMers.

Unfortunately, I know IBMers who would tell you that Big Blue stopped following that policy about 20 years after that slide was made.

Don Massaro, who figures in the book as head of Xerox's Office Products Division and I worked for later, confirms much of the book. He was one of the IBMers who Al Shugart took with him to found Shugart Associates, the early disk drive maker that developed the 5.25" floppy disk drive among others.

It’s hard to know for sure when it started but I’d guess IBMers might be the first.

I mean Pittsburgh is a 3 sport town 😬

I spent some time in Boulder, had family out there (IBMers). Was really lovely for sure

Sounds like the day in 1994 when I found a copy of Bruce Galloway's Fantasy Wargaming at the library.

Bunch of IBMers in town donated or sold their own collections to get into Magic.

I worked for IBM during the Sam Palmisano offshoring bloodbath. I seem to remember Mr Palmisano doing extremely well from the bargain, walking away with a king's ransom pension, enormous bonuses, share options & forever use of the Learjet & IBM apartments.

The laid-off IBMers didn't fare so well.

Possibly related, I stumbled upon this 70s book possibly given to IBMers at some point titled 'what the manager should know about the computer' x.com/vivekgani/st...

The captain of the cable ship, Robert Halpin, was from our tiny village of Newcastle in Wicklow Ireland. The ship was the Geat Eastern built by Brunel. 150ish years later our tiny (tiny) school was one of the first to ever connect to the internet (some extremely kind IBMers lived in the locality).

I’d bet dollars to donuts IBM had engineers who saw personal computing coming, but executive management was too short sighted to capitalize. The HDD industry of the 80s was founded by a lot of former IBMers who lost faith in the company.

Even widows of old IBMers are getting screwed by the likes of @unitedhealtcare.bsky.social here in the failed democratic republic of the US of Forced Birth, Death, Surveillance Capitalism, & Moral Bankruptcy. The greed soaked private white corporationpeople heath insurance companies are loathsome.

Sorry. They were 3820 laser printers, as big as a dresser. Old ex-IBMers, do not come for me.

“Over the next few years, Gilbert guided IBM’s shift toward #designthinking and re-trained thousands of employees to work differently, all without mandating a thing” 🧩

This is why your attempts to change your company culture are failing—and how to fix it
Phil Gilbert transformed the way 400,000 IBMers worked. Now he wants to fix your business's culture.

TBF, another IBM but with about 40x the RSUs. (I also would not sell so short many IBMers.)

My fave is the Dave Snowden (Cynefin framework) musing on sending a memo around to fellow IBMers that Horoscopes are objectively provable to be more accurate than Myers-Briggs

They were still forcing Lotus Suite on IBMers in 2010. It was like sending messages via rock and chisel.
