Excellent live posting - yesterday and today - of sessions from the International Conference on Archaeological Prospection #ICAP2025 in Ghent.

Thanks @girlwithtrowel.bsky.social 🙏
Thursday at #ICAP2025 and we're kicking off the New Methods and Innovations with a keynote from Andreas Stele and the team from LMU Munich / Gent University and Bavarian State Heritage service going over their adoption of UAV based magnetometry - lots of useful technical information and quality data

Going into the final thematic session on CRM and social valorisation - Eileen Ernenwein giving a very personal paper about the publication and subsequent retraction of the Gunung Padang paper in Archaeological Prospection in 2023 - not going to comment much as it remains controversial #icap2025

Chris Gaffney @resandmag.bsky.social ending with the strong statement to a round of applause - 'We (the archaeological prospection community) are not the problem here, but we can and will be the solution' #icap2025 #academicpublishingisbroken

ICAP Day 2 and the keynote is Bradford's very own Prof. Vince Gaffney, opening the landscapes and paleoenvironments session, summarising 20 years+ of research into the submerged landscapes of northern Europe and elsewhere - Doggerland is of course at the fore #ICAP2025

MS testing of stones from environment and from the mound shows some have strong magnetic properties, probably glacially transported from igneous/metamorphic geologies - these are strong enough to look like ferrous in data. #icap2025

Attending the International Conference on Archaeological Prospection 2025 in Gent this week and planning to take up my pre-covid mantle of live messaging the conference content, so maybe mute till Friday me if you don't want lots of #archaeology and #geophysics in your feed... #icap2025

Flanders Cultural Heritage Service & Vrie Universiteit Brussels - Marc de Bie talking about a large ancient woodland / forest in Flanders, the Meerdaalwoud & Heverleebos - exploitation attested since mesolithic. Barrows from prehistory-roman period in early LiDAR maps #icap2025

Known monuments produce these location characteristics: ... and the resulting predictive map fits well with known sites and Kvamme's Gain statistic shows a good correlation with model and sites. #icap2025

Final paper of the morning - Natalie Pickartz from the state office for cultural heritage in Baden Wurttemberg - staying in the forest but looking at pottery production sites from 11th C - stray finds of ceramics and wasters from fieldwalking then LiDAR anomalies located possible site #icap2025

Jorg - clear ditches but structures less clear: there is a difference in magnetic texture (my phrase) between areas with & without enclosures. ERT over the ditch shows it clearly coming through - likely to be a canal. Also looked at magnetic properties of fired clay tools using kappameter #icap2025

Next steps are to look at things like effects of erosion, some geophysical testing of 'high probability' areas - Julia will come back and let us know how it goes #icap2025

This is relevant to my interests as shows a clear gap that hopefully RICHeS & E-RIHS will be able to fill by signposting laboratories, instruments and expertise to utilise for these sorts of studies- see www.riches.ukri.org and www.e-rihs.eu #HeritageScience #ICAP2025 E-RIHS access fund is open now!
