President Donald Trump's nomination of former Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has faced scrutiny from Department of Homeland Security officials. The Senate confirmation process for Schroyer, who lacks federal government experience, has been delayed by Republican Senator Rand Paul. Paul is seeking clarification on the fatal shootings of two anti-ICE protesters in Minneapolis, which have raised concerns about Schroyer's suitability for the role. Internal critics within DHS argue that Schroyer's law enforcement background does not align with the complex demands of leading ICE, preferring current acting director Dave Vetere to retain his position. The White House and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin have publicly endorsed Schroyer, citing his nearly three decades of law enforcement experience. However, key figures including border czar Tom Homan were reportedly surprised by Trump's sudden social media announcement of the nomination. This controversy highlights growing tensions within the administration over personnel decisions and their potential impact on immigration policy.
