Any #wasp #parasitology #ichneumonid folk on BlueSky? What do I have here? UK, about an inch long diptera that looks very ichneumonid-y. I've never seen one this big before.

A braconid of some kind? I don’t see the classic ichneumonid horse head, but I’m not as good at wasps as I’d like to be.

So, go and read about this new species and new (for the mainland Afrotropics) subfamily!

Lukemaan uudesta lajista ja afrotropiikille (p.l. Madagascar) uudesta alaheimosta!

Gå och läs om vår nya art (kanske två arter..) och hur lite underfamiljen setts i tropiken! 🧪
First record of the subfamily Eucerotinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) from the mainland Afrotropics, with a description of a new species

In this case the sawfly egg or larva is eaten, evicted, or just killed, but the sawfly larvae and pupa also have to contend with the Eulophid parasitoids Pnigalio nemati, P. dolichurus and Pnigalio soemius, and the ichneumonid Diaparsis stramineipes.

It was in a very shaded area making it a challenge to photograph. A so-so quality shot that does not do the subject justice. Ichneumonid Wasp - Dolichomitus irritator.

A male ichneumonid seen on my first visit to Trottick Ponds in Dundee last week. No ovipositor and about 2-3 cm long so quite large for the family? I was hoping to identify it but it seems that's almost impossible for males like this! 📷📸🎞️ #bugs #ukwildlife

I guess Nest Fest is another hyper local event that celebrates the bees and wasps. There is an active wasp nest that folks generally avoid, but otherwise it is an excuse to meet folks. Probably here for an hour tops.

I have been catching bugs for a collection but I keep forgetting to take pics 😭

It’s #waspwednesday - last week I saw my first female giant ichneumonid (genus Megarhyssa) - so cool! Was hoping she had found a target to drill into the wood with her ovipositor but she just flew off.

Pretty sure I saw another one in flight this week, I better keep an eye out…

Splendid pictures of ichneumonid wasps by Malcolm Schongalla. Honorable Mention in Panda's Thumb Photography Contest. Wasps are on the same log, laying eggs on horntail larvae, which the wasp larvae will eat. Darwin found it disturbing. pandasthumb.org/archives/202...

More interesting moth trap bycatch in the form of two of these beautiful #Ichneumonids at Quarr Farm campsite this morning, provisionally identified as Eutanyacra picta & a new species for me.
