You know what it looks like, you're an esteemed ichthyologist for goodness sake! It's clearly one of the crossopterygians. But it looks like a coelacanth. And the coelacanth has been extinct for 65 million years.

Sometimes researching this book brings me the grimmest moments of the Cold War and sometimes it brings me a telegram from Gypsy Rose Lee to ichthyologist Gloria Hollister that reads, "In the interest of science, how would you like to tint my osteological structure, babe".

I have an ichthyologist joke but I can't seem to reel it in.
I have a biologist joke but the funding got cut before I could publish it.
I have a game developer joke but they layed off the staff I needed to implement it.

The drawing has been sent to you by Marjorie Courtney-Latimer at the East London museum. Some fisherman brought it to her because it looked weird as hell. It looked SO weird that Marjorie decided to send to a picture to the only ichthyologist she knows. That's you.

I hate ichthyologist Halloween.

It seems that the awful news is true. Kent Carpenter, eminent ichthyologist, was killed in the Philippines. A tragedy, and I’m sorry to all who knew him.

The past few years I've given my students assignments to create Wikipedia pages on various topics. This semester's Fisheries Management students were assigned to write about an ichthyologist/fisheries manager that didn't have a page, with emphasis on women or POC encouraged. I'm sharing them here:

I had a dream that Oscar Isaac was, for some reason, an Ichthyologist and when I asked for assistance for a test, he said it was a waste of his time? I was so confused 😂 Mostly because... he was an Ichthyologist?

One time I asked an ichthyologist I knew what their favourite fish is and ended up learning a lot about Manitoba's sturgeon.

This article gives me the same feeling of getting a taste of someone's passion for their work.
Thanks to @bsky.app, I met @solomonrdavid.bsky.social, visited his lab, read some journal articles, went out and did some fieldwork with him on a boat, and now have written this article. Takeaway: Ancient fish are cool. Science is cool. Public institutions should do cool ancient fish science. (gift)
