#ichthyosaur
That’s extraordinary. Here’s one of my favourite pigment stories (and less grim), a drawing of an ichthyosaur skull made using fossilised sepia from the ink sac of an extinct cephalopod that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

Our recent study led by @lauraminifera.bsky.social about an ichthyosaur fossil in a glacially transported block is making headlines🤩 Paper here: doi.org/10.37570/bgs... 🧪
Første danske hvaløglefossil fundet i Danmark
Første danske hvaløglefossil fundet i Danmark
Fossilsamleren Christian Bach Hansen fandt ryghvirvlen i 2025.

I found a fossilized ichthyosaur tooth in a 5 minute break while someone else was attending to my child. Truly, I am a mum having it all.

Blue Planet III features great footage of Steno, aka rough-toothed dolphin, often said to look like an ichthyosaur. How are they going to work that in?, I wondered. "These dolphins have roamed these oceans for millions of years", Sir David says. This wouldn't be said for any other cetacean...

I would've preferred the ichthyosaur instead of the annoying little leeches that keep you from swimming across the maps in highway 17 and such

Artober 2026 - 30: Ichthyosaur

The oldest Ichthyosaur we know is from the early Triassic, so we suppose they appeared way before that. Triassic Ichthyosaurs didn't look like the ones in this picture, those look Jurassic, but it's been a bit of a meme to draw them where they don't belong...

this sounds stupid but I entirely forgot the Ichthyosaur was in Half Life 2. it shows up for that fake scare in the teleporter experiment gone wrong and then never again. would've been nice if they used it as an enemy

the crossbow's starting ammo on hard can't kill the Ichthyosaur if you miss more than one shot

The first ichthyosaur from Denmark! New publication out now, led by @lauraminifera.bsky.social and with Lotta Dreyer, in DGF Bulletin🥳🧪 The vertebra was in a glacial erratic, likely transported from Skagerrak. A first for the non-Arctic Nordic! doi.org/10.37570/bgs...

Picture a salamander in a suit of armor, flat as a dropped pancake, lying on the ocean floor sucking fish into its face. 237 million years ago, Guizhou. Gerrothorax maritimus, first fully marine amphibian, via @ucdavis.bsky.social. Armor kept the salt out. *burp* Your frogs went soft.

Well in the paper they address Trematosaurus and such and point out their fossil distribution is not unusual for regular amphibians, whereas Gerrothorax lived 200 km away from any paleocoast and was found together with ichthyosaur bones. It‘s definitely seems marine than any other
