#idiophone
It’s spooky season so that means all music must contain at least: a bell, a base drum, a piano or harpsichord, a xylophone, any handheld string instrument, an organ, a flute, one cymbal, an idiophone and/or a theremin.

I wouldn't say Piddington is in need of maracas, but the Chairman of the Parish Council has to double up as the village idiophone.

Mo Rocca playing maracas in Morocco
Skeleton Trivia for Monday, 2026-07-06
Hiya Skeleton Crew, Happy new week! I’m still travelin through the U.K. – I’m on a train in Scotland, matter of fact! – so I don’t got too much time to yak right now. #### Answers to Last Time * The comedian fella I was askin ’bout last time was ****Mo Rocca**** , & I guess I was bein a little cheeky when I didn’t mention his job as a __Daily Show__ correspondent, since that’s maybe what he’s best known for. (At least, it’s what __I__ know him best from.) * The idiophone (non-derogatory) I wanted ya to answer was ****maraca**** , which sounds a heckuva lot like “Mo Rocca”. ## Today’s Trivias # Trivia 1 Lookin out the window right now I can see a li’l town called Linlithgow. Ya might not’ve heard of it, but it’s actually the hometown of Mary, Queen of Scots. Ya’ve heard of HER, right? They love makin movies & stuff ’bout her. Now, I dunno if ya’ve ever seen a movie that portrays someone ya knew in person, but … it’s pretty weird! Like, ya see this actor who’s _kinda_ like the person ya knew, & ya can _sorta_ see the resemblance – but also more likely ’n not they get it all sortsa wrong. Like there was that _Mary of Scotland_ movie with Katharine Hepburn as Mary. I mean, Katharine Hepburn?! How does THAT make sense? I dunno what they were thinkin. But that was in the ’30s, they were always doin weird castin back in those days. More recent was _Mary Queen of Scots_ with Saoirse Ronan as Mary, she did a pretty darn good job if I’m bein honest. But my number one movie Mary has gotta be **what actor** who played her in 1971’s _Mary, Queen of Scots_ , opposite Glenda Jackson’s Queen Lizzie I? I feel like that’s the flick that best captured Mary’s whole … well, I guess her whole _je ne sais quoi_ , is how she’d’ve put it. But basically: charmin as heck, funny too, a wee bit reckless, & not always thinkin everything 100% through. Anyway, this actor I’m askin ’bout got a Best Actress nomination outta the role – one of several Oscar nods throughout her career, matter of fact, though her only win (so far) was for Best Supporting Actress for the title role of 1977’s _Julia_. I’d say she’s the highest profile member of I guess ya’d call it an “actin dynasty” that’s included folks like her dad Michael, her sibs Corin & Lynn, & her daughter Natasha Richardson. # Trivia 2 Anytime I come to Scotland I make sure to stock up on **what orange-colored soda pop** that’s got the slogan “Made in Scotland from Girders”? I dunno how to describe how it tastes – it’s kinda like, I dunno, maybe some kinda Jolly Rancher dissolved in tonic water? – but I sure as heck love the stuff! * * * 💀 Submit Your Answers 💀 💀 View Season Leaderboard 💀 * * * ## OK then Byeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Who’re you callin’ an idiophone??
Skeleton Trivia for Thursday, 2026-07-02
Hiya Skeleton Crew, Didja catch any of the World Cup games yesterday? England was playin the DRC, so as ya can imagine everyone here in London was glued to the teevee: folks standin outside of pubs & watchin the game from the sidewalk, that sorta thing. Pretty cool! Even though I’m not a huge soccer guy, it’s kinda hard not to get caught up in the fun a li’l bit. But I can’t chat! I’m in the middle of a kinda sorta errand, ya see. I found this cool … I guess ya’d call it— an artifact? It’s a cool thingamajig, at any rate. Only thing is it’s kinda … well, it’s doggone HUGE is what it is! I’m strugglin to find a box big enough to ship it back to the States. But none of that’s neither here nor there! So let’s get to business – TRIVIA business! #### Answers to Last Time * It’s ****South Africa**** that the Canadians beat in the knockout round. I wonder who __Les Rouges__ ’ll be playin next?? * The phrase I redacted from the English lyrics to “O Canada” was ****True North**** , eh? ## Today’s Trivias # Trivia 1 **What comedian** was moderator for the National Geographic Society’s Geographic Bee from 2016 to 2019, & also played Vice Principal Douglas Panch in _The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee_ on Broadway? A geography AND a spelling bee? I guess this guy loves bees! Or maybe it’s just that he’s a trivia nerd: after all, he was also on _Jeopardy!_ a coupla times, PLUS he’s a regular on NPR’s _Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!_ # Trivia 2 An _idiophone_ might sound like some kinda insult, but actually it just means an instrument that makes sound by its own vibrations – & NOT with strings or membranes or blowin air through it or whatever. **What idiophone** , which shows up ’specially often in Latin music genres like _son cubano_ & _guaracha_ & _bomba_ , probably traces its origins back to Indigenous American ethnic groups like the Araucanians or the Guaraní – but was also probably independently developed in multiple parts of the world? * * * 💀 Submit Your Answers 💀 💀 View Season Leaderboard 💀 * * * ## OK then Byeeeeeeeeeeeeee

The xylophone is a musical instrument in the percussion family that consists of wooden bars struck by mallets. Each bar is an idiophone tuned to a pitch of a musical scale.

A very obvious and literal choice today.
