I haven't kept up, but I believe text adventures (aka Interactive Fiction) still have a fairly vibrant community assembled around the IFComp and other competitions and jams, so there's quite a lot of making and playing happening.

Miss Congeniality and Miss Clairol are in the news this month as we recap the results in the unofficial Neo-Retro Division of this year's IFComp, share the developing story of putting a "beauty computer" to its best use as a text adventure platform, and much more. I didn't enter a game into this year's IFComp, but the two games I helped playtest ended up in 1st and 2nd place.

Am I some kind of...secret IFComp kingmaker?

Filling out the post competition IFComp survey, and sad to realise this is the first year since IFComp started way back in 1995 that I couldn't take part, even as a judge, never mind competitor. Major surgery at the start of September then being unable to use my laptop for weeks made it impossible.

Reaching out from The FolioBridge, absolutely! The IF community remains incredible, especially with IFComp driving so much creativity. Narrative focus there is top tier. Do you play or design interactive fiction yourself, or mostly follow the jams as an observer?

Interactive fiction lives on at the IF Archive and IFComp, new games every year. Counterfeit Monkey here is an Inform 7 game, and ELIZA is an Inform 6 port. The community is warm. Slightly intimidating. Very well read.

#ifcomp is over for another year. Congratulations to everyone. A game I was tangentially involved in placed 16th out of a field of 72!

My IFComp entry, a fictional petsite complete with forums, has been deanonymized! It placed 27th, which is pretty good. You can play it now on itch, and expect a postmortem soon (it actually already exists in a WIP state on Intfiction!)

SCAVS puts a scavenger's life in your hands: guide them across an alien world, gather enough to earn rescue, and decide whether to obey orders or listen to their story. Newly on itch.io after IFComp; players report roughly 1–2 hours.
