For #FossilFriday a small #IsleofWight iguanodontian dinosaur tibia in the collections @nhm-london.bsk.social. What makes it special is that it is from the Gideon Mantell collection. The fossil takes me back 125 million years but its history casts me back to the 1820s.

Next on the list, and one of two incredibly obscure ornithischians from the Kem Kem, an indeterminate iguanodontian! This animal is only known from a singular half-metre-long footprint. More thoughts and size comparison below ⬇️

A dinosaur perk was that worn teeth got replaced. A section of the lower jaw of a big iguanodontian from the #IsleofWight shows the process. Tooth replacement was organised in waves known as Zahnreihen, so that large sections of the jaw weren’t left toothless (enlarge to see numbers). #FossilFriday

A pliosaur vertebra from the Etches Collection sporting a notochordal boss, an embryonic remnant. These are common in ankylosaur verts but not uncommon in #IsleofWight posterior dorsal and early caudal iguanodontian centra. Rarely reported elsewhere it seems. #FossilFriday

For #FossilFriday a sacrum from a medium sized iguanodontian in the collections of @nhm-london.bsky.social. Found at Sudmoor Point on the #IsleofWight by Reginald Hooley a wine merchant from Southampton who also discovered the fabulous Mantellisaurus in 1914. Iggy sacra are so aesthetic.

A posterior view of an incomplete braincase of a large iguanodontian dinosaur allowing a peek through the foramen magnum into the cavity occupied by the brain (~12x5 cms). Found by Reginald Hooley who also found Mantellisaurus in 1914. From #IsleofWight now @NHM-London.bsky.social. #FossilFriday

The morning after a stormy night. Slumped Cretaceous rocks at Compton Bay #lsleofWight where the iguanodontian Comptonatus chasei roamed. #FossilFriday.

For #FossilFriday some iguanodontian dorsal vertebrae with ossified tendons which would have formed a crisscross pattern. First appeared Late Jurassic associated with increased mass and quadrupedality. From #IsleofWight in the collections of @nhm-london.bsky.social.

Really taken with Haolong dongi, out today from Jiandong Huang, Pascal Godefroit and team. Just submitted news article on it. An iguanodontian with abundant hollow spikes across the neck and body, projecting from among conventional basement scales, and with rows of plate-like scales along the tail.

Quite how this dorsal vertebra from #IsleofWight iguanodontian dinosaur Brighstoneus got like this is hard to say. Almost certainly trauma caused a fracture which perhaps was splinted unnaturally by attached tendons so that it healed in this peculiar circular fashion. #FossilFriday

Finally, another fuzzy ornithischian: www.nature.com/articles/s41.... This is a big deal for dinosaur #paleoart, confirming some of what we've been doing for a while now, but also showing that we've probably underestimated how weird the integuments of these animals could be.

Ornithopod dinosaurs are often ignored or derided as boring, lacking cool ornamentation or defenses. Haolong is a look at what we couldn’t see before, and makes me wonder about Camptosaurus, Tenontosaurus, Thescelosaurus, and friends.
