After watching poet-actor Christopher Logue as Richelieu in The Devils, it's time to return to his Iliad, beautiful, controversial, and utterly compelling. I love this book ......

People say this but then read the Iliad and so on. I think a lot of it has to do with what gets labelled poetry.

Don’t tell me autism didn’t exist in Ancient Greece and Rome, someone had to remember every line of the Iliad and it sure wasn’t Pliny the Neurotypical
I could remember all the basic trigonometry functions, but instead, I remember every lyric to sugar ray’s “fly”

We tend to lump together every sort of transformative work. Virgil writing the Aenid, picking up from Homer’s Iliad, is “fanfic” in the same way that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is. And on one level, yes. But removing the role of capitalism in this process flattens the conversation.

October reading... a retelling of The Iliad from the female perspective, an exploration of neo-Luddism, some off-kilter short stories from Cornwall and the second in Alan Moore's brilliant 'Long London' series.

The Alexandrian scholars sometimes have seemed to be closet standup comics. I can almost imagine them complaining about authenticity and saying stuff like "Take book 9 of the Iliad....please!"

My most conservative impulse is that sometimes I see people reading, like, a Curtis Yarvin essay or a modern fantasy novel that is isomorphic with the DreamWorks Face, and I want to slide a classic between them and the screen. Something fun like The Iliad or Shakespeare. Anything but that drek.

What we can all learn from The Iliad‘s opening lines.
A Master Class in Words: On the Vitality and Vividness of The Iliad‘s Opening Lines
The first verses of the Iliad cleverly set up what will follow. Achilles’ wrath laid “countless pains on the Achaeans”: suffering and tragedy, we realize, will be prominent in what is to com…

I gave up pub quizzes after the question "What was the name of Homer's epic poem?". We put the Iliad. Apparently the Odyssey was the right answer.
