We got to watch this rare, endangered Īlioholoikauaua (Hawaiian Monk Seal) getting settled in to his resting spot last month on Kauaʻi. So beautiful.💚

Popplio’s name comes from the word pop, like a bubble. But the -lio comes from the Hawaiian name for the native Monk Seal, ‘Ilioholoikauaua (“Dog that moves through rough water”). It’s evolutions lose that cool theming though and I wish they kept it.

The Hawaiian🌺 monk seal 🦭, Neomonachus schauinslandi is one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world 🌎 and is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. In Hawaiian culture, the monk seal is known as ‘īlioholoikauaua, meaning “dog 🐕that runs in rough seas 🌊”.
