Not much is said about how, in the Illiad, Achilles wouldn't leave his tent to fight the Trojans after the loss of his lover, and fellow soldier.
But it's in there.
Is that the "warrior ethos" Hegseth has in mind?

I've ordered new tights. One pair has ancient vase scenes of the Illiad on them. Achilles tights.

*smiles in massive nerd.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Ares volume of the Olympians, but it’s basically a graphic novel retelling of the Illiad 👏👏👏

LA has The Illiad Bookshop and The Huntington, what more could one want?

like they did Romance of the Three Kingdoms, they could easily recreate the Illiad and the Odyssey with existing gundam characters

"what if you could get home and have your AI generate a movie where youre a cool action hero and fuck [insert famous young woman]"

idk man id probably watch Troy (2004) again because that movie is overhated and they really capture the priam-achilles scene thats at the core of the illiad

The Illiad but Arthuriana sounds like it would be my personal crack.

The mention of the Illiad as verse not novels just completely mindblows me to the fact that an over thousand year old story has survived through word of mouth and was that important and significant to survive the tides of history #realityhunger

Empire of Japan is Patroclus from The Illiad. 2nd fiddle to a much more formidable counterpart- nazi germany as Achilles. Seemed better that he was thanks to proximity to counterpart and defeated weaker foes. Went down hard against a stronger foe. (not sure who Agamamnon is tho).

guy who thinks people being self-destructive isn't realistic. "ugh the illiad is so dumb. if achilles wasn't so obsessed with getting revenge for patroclus he wouldn't have died, what a stupid story"

I didn't know that Apollo was also an archer.

Tbf I haven't read the Illiad (or the Odyssey for that matter)

Apollo Far-Shooter, sending invisible arrows of plague down on those who anger him.

Makes sense. He and Artemis are twins, she uses archery for hunting. While he uses archery as a skill.

You just said that Tolkien couldn't escape his own context. To my understanding it implies that also me or you can't escape our own context. This is really not controversial take: for example people who read Illiad today read about white skinned or black skinned people, and see it through political

Olympos and the follow up book Ilium by Dan Simmons is a brilliant take also on the Illiad.

Yann Martel's latest novel came at the perfect time for me. I was already in the midst of a mini-obsession with The Odyssey movie, so my mind was primed for this novel about an alternate version of The ILLIAD and a professor who left his family to study it in England.

TFW when you realise Troy was also called Ilion and -ad means 'story of' so another name for the Illiad is

Troy Story

Yeah, eponym was one of the literary devices taught to my class when we read Illiad and Odyssey. Was pretty sure.

I will say, the big box store has the goods and staff to put together some stunning displays that take advantage of current trends. The Odyssey table let me know that Emily Wilson's translation of the Illiad is out now!
