*attempts to depict a deer about to pop a dog* bad: me & partner bad: me & partners sonas bad: scenario me & partner came up with about our sonas bad: scenario me & partners sonas came up with bad: scenario me & partners sonas came up with about /their/ sonas good: scenario me & partners sonas sonas came up with = = bonus rant = = a lot of video game developers these days (generally indie) aim to create what are referred to as “wholesome” games, generally meaning the game doesnt feature violence. like, stemming from thoughts along the lines of “why do so many games just casually and thoughtlessly have you kill everything in your path?” one such game is called “lil gator game”. basically, imagine if the “legend of zelda: breath of the wild” was just a bunch of kids running around with sticks hitting cardboard cutout make-believe monsters. it is an incredibly charming game and i am a big fan of it. the problem is that while the game is very much wholesome in a literal sense, if the “wholesome game” movement involves being a game without violence, what does it mean that this game is about kids playing a game about violence? if the violence was never real to begin with, why does adding a layer of abstraction make it better? obviously its not a graphic depiction. but neither is an enemy getting hit with a sword and then disappearing in a puff of smoke. or a text game that just says “you defeated the monster”. there is probably a coherent thesis i could pull from this but ive been spinning my wheels here, i appreciate you reading this far and hope you have a good day (even if you actually didnt read it and just skipped here by chance. you are allowed a good day too)
